In the Maintenance Manual X7425 on page 24L3 it says that the holding tank is made of polypropylene and it gives instructions for mending it.
In Maintenance Manual X7525 it says the same on page 24J7.

It is difficult to tell the difference between polyethylene and polypropylene with a flame test. The flame colors are similar.
If you scratch the surface, polyethylene is softer and will scratch easily. Polypropylene is harder and does not scratch as easily.

Any holding tanks that I have looked at over the years have all been polypropylene.

Maintenance Manual X7525 on page 24J7 refers to the water tank, not the holding tank

You are right. That should have read 24L3 instead of 24J7.

Emery,

I am in Houston and don't have the manuals readily available; are both the black tank and water tank Polypropylene?

If yes could you send in an email with the Subject Black Tank and Water Tank material with the appropriate references for each?

Doing so will make it easy to find in the future.

Adding my reply to several threads on black tank material ...

I have mentioned this before -- when I took my original black tank (1973) to the plastic tank shop I told them it was polypropylene per the manual. But they determined it was polyethylene when they welded new bungs on the top.

The manual does show polypropylene for the 75 on, however my 1977 OEM water tank was definitely polyethylene and the holding tank polypropylene.

If any one is getting it repaired the plastic welder will know.

Rob,
Are you already back in the US again in damp Houston? How long are you staying this time?

JR,

Yep, I'm in Houston (Humble to be more accurate) and my flight home is October 14. We're planning on heading west across northern NM
- AZ - Grand Canyon - Vegas - LA - San Diego - across southern AZ - NM - Humble.

Not sure when as management has not advised flight dates.

Rob,

Sorry I missed your call today. We'll talk soon.

When you go to the Grand Canyon, consider avoiding the South Rim with its
hordes of tourists. Instead, go to PIpe Spring National Monument <
http://www.nps.gov/pisp/index.htm> on the North Rim. Across the road is
what was once the "Mad Rabbit Campground", now something else (or perhaps
closed). It's an interesting historical site. When we were there in '96
we were greeted and guided by the wife of the then-assigned Ranger, who had
been born there in 1937, son to the very first NPS Ranger assigned there.

From PSNM, head south to Toroweap Overlook. It's a 53 mile (IIRC) gravel
road trip, and you may meet no one going or coming, but the road is not
nearly as bad as they make it sound here (at least not during our visit in
1996 or in 2013): We
did NOT take the GMC to the rim -- but could have. There is plenty of room
there to park, and, apparently on restrictions on doing so.

I have no desire to ever visit the South Rim again after having seen
Toroweap. Last summer, Dennis and I hit both sights in one day, but we're
"fast see-ers". :-) It's a pretty easy drive on to Zion.

Jim,

Unfortunately ya'll will be back home by the time Helen gets here and we leave.

I would have loved to "roll up, roll up for the Magical Route 66 Mystery Tour!"
