I replaced my 3.07 final gear with a 3.70 this week end. I also replaced the speedometer driven gear assembly for the speedo for the 3.70. I have an object that is cylindrical in shape that is installed between the governor assembly and the speedo gear assembly. This object has a single electrical wire about five inches long and not connected to anything with no loose wire anywhere in the area. Was this part of some cruise control system that is no longer used? I have the standard cruise control that was working before my engine swap but that is a item to be addressed at another time.

Bruce,
That's probably a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) formerly used for, as you
guessed, a cruise control. Or perhaps a speedometer, or even an Electronic
Fuel Injection (EFI). You should be able to simply unscrew it and
reconnect the speedometer cable where you remove the device.

If your "find" is a VSS, do not throw it away. A VSS is needed if you should ever want to install an eletro-motive cruise control from a later GMC vehicle. Think full-size pick-ups for a start.

Hi guys I also have the same thing, it is on the passenger side of transmission near engine. Mine has the wire but it has been cut or chewed through by a mouse or rat..lol. But both ends are there. I have cruise on my GMC so I guess I should reconnect this and then when road ready see if the cruise works? I will solder the two ends together and put heat shrink tubing over the connection to keep moisture out. I would guess the other end of the wire attaches to the cruise control unit up above, but since I already have it hanging I didn't look to see where it went. I only noticed this when I was under the GMC looking at the fuel lines. Glenn

If the wire is a single conductor it is most likely the speed sensor for a thermosan system. If so it is a simple speed sensor that closes a switch from the wire to ground when the speed is up to about 35mph.

I'll be checking my system more closely to see for sure what this connects to. I don't know if my 74 came with the thermosan or not, haven't gotten that far yet..lol..Glenn

That wire could be the downshift (kickdown) solenoid wire.

This speed switch is not available anywhere that I know of. The vacuum switch for the thermosan system is also hard to replace. I figured it would cost be about $150+ to get my system working again. I ended up finding a $35 solution that eliminates both devices and does a better job than the original senors. But that would be a topic for another thread.
