Greetings to all:
I subscribed to the group a while back and have greatly enjoyed reading all of your posts. It is providing a great “base” for the understanding my future GMC.

I have been looking for a while for a unit to purchase, and wanted to reach out to the group for help with possible leads. I would love to be able to afford a complete new restoration by Cinnabar (or similar), but will most likely need to buy such a unit that was restored a few years ago. My ideal unit would be a recently restored 23 foot unit with a dry side bath, though would also consider a 26 foot dry bath as well. I have researched and found quite a few sites that I regularly (i.e. almost daily) monitor, though all suggestions for great sites will be appreciated. Today it occurred to me that many of the best units probably never even reach these sites, so am looking to the community to help me locate my GMC. I realize “restored” means many things to many people. My goal here is to have something modernized and pretty darn reliable, as after a few dry runs of increasing length, I want to use it to travel the US for a year or so, while doing research for a new book.

I’ve always loved these motorhomes since they first came out, and am now at a place in life where it is feasible for me to finally own a nice one.
Thank you to all who might be able to provide leads! My timeframe is somewhat flexible, so I am willing to wait a while for the right unit to show up. While finding one close to Ca would be great, I would be willing to travel for the right unit.
Regards and thanks to all for your consideration and leads.

Buy one cheap that needs work and turn it into what you want.

You've always wanted to own one, buy one and make it your own.

I am doing the same, slowly, but albeit surely.

I'd recommend waiting for the right one to come along. I found a '78 Royale center kitchen (dry bath) that the POs had dropped nearly $100k into, and it was ready to roll. OK, it still needed a few details seen to, but it's been a very solid, enjoyable coach and should continue to be for many years to come. Mine had 4k miles on a rebuilt engine and transmission, serious maintenance on every system, most of the systems replaced, and plenty of cool mods. There's no way in the world I could have built up something this nice for twice the money I paid for my coach if I had started with a typical $5-10K coach - though there is NOTHING wrong with that either. I just figured I'd rather take a really nice coach and improve on the details rather than spend the first couple years getting it really road worthy. I've never had a moment's of buyer's remorse.

Drop me a line if you want more details on what I found... I looked for many months until the right one came along at the right price.

Dave,

If you want a coach that is ready to use, keep looking here and bookmark all of the chapter "For Sale" places. The rare occasion that a good coach comes up for sale is typically because the owner has stopped traveling..

I bought one that was reasonably unmolested by the PO's. It had sat unused for several years. We got it in 07 and got it on the road this year. The reason it was unused. Everything needed work. The PO was way behind on repairs. We paid right for it in 07. Two years later, after the financial market "adjustment" it would have been worth half what we paid. If you want one to use right away look for one that has been recently used. The hint about the chapter for sale places is right on. If you want a GMC where you know the condition of every system because you have rebuilt them all, and I mean All, do it my way. Be willing to pay top $ for a good coach. Have patience. Make sure you have someone who is familiar with GMCMH's check it out with you before you buy.

Due to market conditions, I, like many others, would recommend a "rolling coach". (A coach that is being used, not sitting for years.)

But my main reason for repling is that your "ideal unit" (recently restored 23 foot unit with a dry side bath) would have to be a MODIFIED unit. Dry baths use a lot of space so I am not aware of a 23 foot that came with a dry _SIDE_ bath. I _OWN_ both _REAR_ dry bath and _SIDE_ wet bath 23 foot Birchavens.

Thanks Wayne:, I do like it, and it is very close to what I am looking for. I will be making an appointment with California DMV to see what is involved with such a purchase, and if there are any "red flags” associated with purchasing a unit from Canada. Calif can be very picky at time re cars / trucks etc from out of state.
I will keep in touch.
