Just cleaned up the gear shift cable that was quite hard to move That helped, but I find the choosing of gears quite unprecise, like the mechanism in the steering collumn is worn.
The handle on the transmission is firm and precise.

Any experience?

Lenze,

I have owned very few vehicles with automatic transmissions, but I had a very similar problem. I thought it was the cable, so I disassembled and lubricated everything only to have the situation get worse.....
In this case, I discovered that the plastic bushings at both ends were the cause. (I assumed there were once bushing at both ends, but only some of one end remained.) I this case, I was able buy replacement parts and that cured everything.

In my GMC, the pointer in the speedometer is off by about 1/3 of a gear, but we have gotten used to that. The shift detents are are actually in the transmission, so we just find the right place.

Jeez, Matt. Why don't you move that little screw on the bottom of the
steering column that locates the end of the string?

Isn't it just a friction clip slipped onto a flange?

Sir: to adjust there is a slider joint where the tranny rod fastens to the linkage on the frame. I block the coach and put the tranny in D, loosen the lock on the slider joint and move the shifter till it is in the D detent and tighten lock. Check all gears and fine tune as needed. To adjust the dash indicator there is a Phillips screw in a slot holding the cable on the column shift housing, right side just below the dash. Loosen screw and slide in slot till indicator is centered on D. You do need to check the bushings. There could also be an issue inside the column as the bearing and tilt housing is pot metal.

It's a clip slid over a slot in the edge of the shift collar with a screw
through it to lock it in place.

Matt,

Are you talking about the small plastic bushings on the shifter yoke shaft down near the transmission on the left side of the engine. Where did you get the bushings? Do you have a part number?

Thanks,
