that last bolt is really buried in there!
everything else is loose, but the pass side top bolt is completely inaccessible.

Also, do I need to support the transmission when I pull the FD???

Thanks as always

Keith,

Your subject's a little confusing. Are you still looking for the "No"?

Remember the old "starter wrenches" -- 12 pt box ends bent into sort of a
"C"? That's what you need to make to get to that inside top bolt. About
1/12th of a turn at a time is all you'll achieve. Slow & miserable but
definitely do-able. Don't ever put one back in there.

No, the transmission doesn't depend on the FD for support. But remember
that the FD weighs about 85#, so don't let it surprise you. I
strongly recommend making a jack attachment which can be bolted to the
driver's side axle attachment flange to support the FD.

For re-installation, I like to put a couple of studs in bottom holes to
guide the FD into position. In fact, I made a thin plastic guard, in two
pieces, to protect the gasket during installation. It's made with most of
the holes slotted so that it can be removed after they're started. But
that's not really necessary with guide studs.

Most of us don't attempt to put that bolt back in. If there is one in there I have fount that a two foot extension with a flex joint on the end with a socket can reach it.

You don't have to support the transmission or engine.

One suggestion is to get two six inch or even eight inch bolts that fit the lower two holes. When you get the final drive in position put in those two bolts. Now you can slide the FD back along those bolts and the shaft with the gear will engage easily. Then bolt it in and replace the long bolts with the right ones.

I have replaced mine by myself this way using a floor jack to support the FD.

That C shaped wrench Ken mentioned is called an obstruction wrench. HF sells a low cost set. I put that last bolt back in but it was a lot of work. If everything works OK without it then I guess it was slightly over-engineered.

well I shoved my hand in between the header and the engine and IF I'm on the right spot that bolt is already missing!

I did loosen the rest and it does move a little so it sure looks ready to drop. It was getting really dark and late so I put it off till tonight in the light so I can see which fingers got crushed Razz

Can't wait to test out the 3.70s!

well it's in, but the gasket got totally destroyed.
So it will have to come back out at least partially to get the gasket in.

I now understand your gasket protectors Ken. I don't know how you get that thing in there with out ripping the gasket up.
I suppose i'll also have to clean the gasket sealer off in place now too, no way am I pulling it all the way out again.
