"...If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. Gloom, despair and agony on me..."

The Wicked Mistress strikes again. Found out the aux tank would not go horizontal because I had slid the rear flange between the chassis and the body. In trying to get it free one of the rear tank hanger bolts snapped. Turns out, this was not the first time: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/6405/photo_2_2_.JPG

Anyone source these locally before? I'm about to hit the hardware store to see what would be close. Can one be made with enough heat and a vice?

I'd give bonus points for knowing the lyrics above, which would stump my twenty-something co-workers, but its probably too easy for you guys...

That looks like a home made version I don't think the original had threads on the hook side. Just find a bolt the same length or longer the same diameter cut the head off . Heat the metal with a torch where the bend needs too be till it is red and bend it in the vise with a hammer. If you find a j bolt the right size it would also work.

I think bolts like that are available at a good hardware store. I'm not sure about heating a piece of threaded rod as that may not be hard enough. Unless you harden it after heating.
Using a good grade bolt with the head cut off would do it.

Buy the longest bolt of that thread pitch that you can. Cut off the
head. Heat and bend a hook into it. Good to go.

There's not enough force on the new bend to ever unbend it. All of the
pressure is being put right on the "crook" of the bend.

I wouldn't use threaded rod. With that material you have threads
bearing right on the hole in the frame. Lots of little saw teeth
(albeit pretty soft from heating) grinding away over time could "waller"
out the hole and loosen things... which give the teeth MORE room to move
and cut. Get a long bolt with just enough thread to do the job...
pretty much what the original part did.

LOL, I knew I had the right age crowd for that one.

Local Hardware store - 3/8" x 6" concrete anchor bolt. Just needed to put it in a vise and whack it a couple of times to turn the 90 into a "J".

It has about an inch too much thread, but I can fix that later with a saw. Total cost $.50.

Almost the cheapest part I've replaced yet... Very Happy

Thanks for all of the replies. Tanks are in, secured and hooked up. Next is the upper power steering bracket that got left off, and bleeding the brakes.

Joe,

With reference to the use of a 3/8 x 6" concrete anchor bolt bashed in a vise to make hook bolts, you have solved a problem for me. Thanks for following up.

We're done singing now!

JOE,
Any time something breaks in my driveway I consider it a good thing. A dragging gas tank 200 miles from home would suck. Good find on the replacement.
