JR,
Thanks for the reference and suggestion. Today I received a note from
Auber Instruments saying that they've shipped my order, which had been
misplaced. They sent another stating that the replacement they sent does
not come in the clamp-on style, for which I've already drilled the exhaust
pipes, so they want to know what style I want -- for the already-shipped
parts. :-)
I'll wait to see what they actually shipped, whether I'm likely to be
satisfied with the quality, etc., before trying an alternate source. I do
have an off-net offer of lab grade TC's in a profile of my choice, so
that's tempting at any rate.
One problem with the Omega offerings is that they don't seem to offer a
probe type that's really suitable for extension into the exhaust stream.
I'll check their offerings further, but the page you linked to shows no
such configuration.
Thanks for your help; I'll keep you posted on my progress,
Ken

Ken,
Without seeing what you are presently using it is difficult for me to recommend a replacement that would be robust enough to survive in the exhaust stream of the exhaust header. You need a unit that is fairly stiff and vibration resistance. It must be a sheathed type possibly in a small thermowell that is screwed or braised onto the header pipe. Each exhaust pulse causes tip the unprotected thermocouple to move and to actually cause it to vibrate. If I can be of further help just let me know.

JR,
Here's the Auber Instruments TC we installed and had all the trouble with.
It seemed appropriate at the time and I still don't understand why both of
them failed immediately. The actual TC installation was done by a GMCer
who owns a custom truck shop in NC and has installed dozens of TC's in
diesel trucks. I'm sure the installation was not at fault.
What do you think of the clamp-on mount I used? Must I go to all the
trouble of removing the exhaust pipes and having bungs welded into them?

Ken, My airplane has one EGT probe per cylinder. Two of them started acting up after 25 years of service so I replaced all of them about 6 years ago. I got them, from a company in Michigan. Now I just need to find that company. They are the clamp on type.

Ken,
The parts from Auber look to be the right stuff that should work. The picture shows a very good quality assemble of the TC. The clamp on mount should not be a problem unless you are have an exhaust leak that is noticeable and require a little high temp ceramic sealant. I guess that the real issue is understanding the failure mode of the previous TC’s.

JR,
My problem right now is that they're shipping me a "heavier duty" version
of that TC ('though the probe tip is smaller in diameter) which does not
come with a clamp mount; I'll have to tap for a 1/8 NPT, or similar, into
the thin exhaust tube. Or remove the exhaust pipes and weld in bungs. :-(
I'll see what actually arrives.

Ken,
If you have to weld in some bungs, these are pretty cool:
http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/3391/Burns-Stainless-Announces-Their-New-Flanged-O2-Sensor-Bung.aspx
They may only be available for o2 sensors though.

Auber offers adapters for 'most any thread, so I could use those, which are
pretty nifty. Sure hope I don't have to got that route. If I do, it will
be a while before I'm monitoring EGT again. While they ain't leakin' I
ain't removin' those pipes.
