I believe someone noted long ago that the Onan won't run without the air filter. Am I hallucinating?

Peer,

You have air and spark. Is the fuel pump pumping? Is there fuel in the carb? Good fuel? How long has it been since it was started?

I know I have a tendency to skip over the basics to find a short cut to the solution. Often the fix was one of the steps skipped.

Spray starting fluid on air filter while cranking. If you have spark it will run. Then chase the fuel.

Does it try to start as long as you hold the switch and blow a bunch of smoke out the exhaust? Bad control board. Jump pins 5 and 9 (a test lead with alligator clips works great). You can also jump 9 to 11, which does the same thing but bypasses the fuse as well. The fuel pump should start to run immediately. Press the start switch. If it starts, your control board is bad. You may have to remove the jumper to stop the Onan.

FYI if you have been trying to start it for some time your spark plugs are likely fouled. Check and clean them.

Here's picture of the board showing the pin numbers. 5 is at the upper left, 11 and 9 on the right.

We are so sorry to have caused that much trouble.

The problem was, the Onan folks were clever. They said, let's put
another sensor in there. One that checks oil level... do I need to say
more *blush*

It's tired, and I'm late, but this seems to have come down to the oil pressure switch. The engine starts when I jumper 5-9 - doesn't since I put the cover back on.
two questions:
Where - precisely is the oil pressure switch and is it a common item at parts stores.
Second, and shame on me for this,I drew an arc as i was putting in the lower left mounting bolt: how much damage did I do there?
Also (Yeah, I know I said two) could the circuit board be bad, and how do I check for that?

Mitch,

If you want to prove it is the switch, simply unplug the switch. It works by grounding the circuit when the pressure is too low. So by unplugging the switch it will always send that there is oil pressure all the time.

The switch is located near the base of the oil filter. Standing in front of the generator remove the right cover that has the oil filter through the hole in it. Look at the bottom of the filter and you should see the switch screwed in and one wire going to it.

If you want to unplug the switch without removing the cover simply remove the wire plugged in to the board on pin #12.

The switch is available at AZ, Rock Auto, and Advanced. I believe it is Wells PS117. PS117 is 3 to 5 PSI, Normally Closed, but check the threads and electrical connector closely with the old one to be sure it is the same thing. If you have the GMCMI parts list you might look there. Mine is 11 miles away in my coach. I wish I had the list electronically and could store it on my PC, but GMCMI does not want to give it to us.

As far a the electrical short goes, it is impossible for me to remotely guess what, if anything, might have been damaged. I would pull the cover off again and at least check to see if the 5 Amp fuse is blown. Then try the board again to see if it is working correctly with the oil switch disconnected. Jumpering 5 to 9 proves that the generator is running correctly and that the control board is keeping it from running. It might be the board but it also could and input to the board that is bad. So do not just throw a new board at it.

I know he has a time schedule to keep to and needs to get on the road. I do not know his schedule but if he wants to reroute by my place I could have Jim K. send me a board for Monday afternoon delivery and we could troubleshoot the problem after Monday afternoon mail delivery here in NW Indiana. Also Tom Hampton is on his way and probably has the board in stock. Tom is in Marysville, OH just off of I-70. Call first to verify this.

Feel free to telephone me if you think I can help. My number is on the Black list.
