Guys, I'm building a genny compartment from scratch with HVAC Sheetmetal and wanted to know what those of you who have relined their ONAN bays with used? This is for a Honda EV4010 which already has an air-cooled shroud over the exhaust pipe, but want something super heat and flame resistant.

Thx.

I used 5/8" plywood with triangular braces of wood along the inside seam of the plywood joints and used a foil faced sound deadener from Soundown. The deadener is not fire PROOF but will not sustain a flame on its own. Made the barbarian much more civil.

My Onan compartment was poorly fitted sheet metal when I gutted it in '98.
After improving the fit, I covered the box with "duct board" (a 1" thick
dense fiberglass mat covered on both sides with aluminized kraft paper,
normally used to make a/c ducts). That was then covered with plywood. The
noise and heat was almost totally excluded by that sandwich. Even with my
now-installed Troy-Bilt generator, very little noise gets into the coach
(can't say the same for the neighbors, I fear).

I'll have to look at the welding mat. I plan to use 2" high density foam on the outside of the sheet metal box with plywood over that to sound proof the inside of the RV, but I want to do something to deaden the noise to the neighbors.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the answers.

Chris--what generator are you trying to quiet?--the 2 stroke HF unit?

Nahhh. no quieting that little beastie. I have a 100 hour EV4010 going into my TT. It's not noisy, really, runs at 3600 RPM as trade off for 2 pole at half the weight. I could put it in without help.

Just trying to make it quieter for the guy that always parks right next to me and tent camps in the RV section at our Rocket launches and then complains about the noise and fumes. Had sheet metal housing made by an AC duct guy in Mesa, and a "roof Jack" sort of hood that shields the mostly wood trailer bottom from the heat... I'll post photos when I get my Mac out of the shop.

I'm basically doing what I considered doing in the GMC when I wanted to move the Onan forward under the couch and out from under the bed.

Hate to be a newbie and say this..... noise and fumes are part of the deal having an onboard generator.

Certainly not to the owner of the coach....... but I believe little can be done to help anyone who camps near the exhaust.

my 2 cents
