I called Shell Motor Oil today about their Rotala engine oil. As of now. That oil still contains 1200 PPM of ZDDP. I was told that some new Federal government standards are expected in 2016. I got the same story from Northland Oil. I have also found out that some oils now that are classified as SL. Don't contain 1200 PPM of ZDDP anymore. So we're good till 2016 in regards to ZDDP.Bob Dunahugh

You better check on the EPA rules that kicked in (IIRC) in January of 07.

Ken Burton thought it would be a good idea to get that info in print. Good point. So I called to ask for an E-mail to be sent to me. I don't know how to post that to this group. Can I send the Shell e-mail to someone to post. Thanks, Bob Dunahugh

Bob,

I've been using MOBIL-1 15w50 for about 6 years now with no problems.
It's the old blend that is designed for classic cars with flat tappets (sp?)
and ez to find.

It should be noted that this level of ZDDP ( 1200 PPM ) is a lower level of what used to be in the oil before the EPA mandated the reduction and elimination. Before the reduction was mandated the oils had anywhere between 1550 to 1675 PPM of ZDDP. I use a Rislone additive. The packaging has changed to a smaller bottle which is now 16 OZ. but the same amount of ZDDP. Just my choice, your may vary.

I sent the Shell Oil E-mail to Ken to post. Thank you Ken.All types of oils should be change once a year to get the contaminants drained out. Synthetic are great for lots of miles. As that's what they're great at. For me personally. I put about 3,000 a year on our GMC. So synthetics just don't have any advantage for me because I still have to change the oil due to time mostly. With Rotala, and other equivalent oils. They just fit MY schedule great. And no expense of ZDDP additives Thus I'm getting a good job done for $12.50 an oil change. You need to do what fits your driving habits. And I like the idea of getting the garbage out every fall. Bob Dunahugh

We have about 30 gas flat tappet engines left at work. Most are 300/6 fords. We have not had a problem with cams going flat. They get either diesel 15/40 or gas 5/30 oil depending on seasonal temperatures, hours on engines, leakers. These engines would have between 5000 hours with the majority around 14000 hours.

That being said I will drop $6 to $12 worth of additive depending on oil pan capacity in my flat tappet engines every oil change. All my oil that is not burnt goes into the recycling process so not really concerned about the environmental impact being less than probably 1% of the people that add zddp

Nah,

It says that Rotella T is the slickest oil on the planet; your fuel mileage will go up so much you'll think your engine has turned
into a perpetual motion machine PLUS it will NEVER wear out!
