Morning list,

one of the GMCs I am looking at has had major headline replacement done
to it. Unfortunately the opening for the bunk bed behind the driver's
seat is no longer visible.

Anyone has any thoughts on how to reinstate the bunk bed in this situation?

Thanks

FWIW.. if the bed is there, measure very carefully many times before cutting...the plate SHOULD still be there hopefully, but who knows when it comes to the PO Neutral

The hooks that hold up the bunk bed protrudes through headliner. If you don't see them protruding out then they are not there.

I think that only the early coaches have the protruding hooks. Not a good thing if you value your scalp :-)

Peer,

Assuming the bunk (rear of couch) is still in place all you would have to do is:

1) Raise the bunk to the horizontal position
2) Support it in that position
3) Lift the bunk support straps so they are 90° to the bunk (fore & aft / left & right) until they touch the ceiling
4) Mark the ceiling at that point and cut a small hole in the headliner to see if the hooks are still there

Go to the Photo Site and do a search for bunk, there's a lot of photos that can help you.

Thanks for the detailed description. I assume they are identical for the
one directly behind the driver (opposite the seating area)

Thanks for clarification. We are talking about the same bed :) And
judging from my experience so far, and Don Borlase's note, that
couch/bed combination seems to have been a favourite thing to
remove/disable from the coaches. Probably due to the fact that a lot of
GMC folks have been two-people-affairs, wanting a nicer seating than the
couch provides.

I have a bunk bed behind the driver and raise it periodically to store pillows and things on while napping in the bunk below. I can see a child sleeping in it but am hesitant to try a 200 pound adult load. How much will the top bunk realistically support?

What year is the coach? Later model years had a flush socket rather than protruding hooks.

We specifically looked for a coach with the bunk bed setup. Our coach will be used by my son and his family which includes 3 kids, young now but they will be teenagers some day. We haven't used the coach extensively yet but last fall we took it for a long weekend. I slept in the bunk and it worked just fine. My son and wife slept one night in the fold down bed in the back (two couches fold to make the bed) and they didn't like one of the supports that went across the set up. They could feel it on their backs so it wasn't good. We are in the process of figuring out a way to fix the problem. They bought a double bed air mattress and it's yet to be tried back there. However, the two boys, 6 and 8, slept like kings back there. Second and third night, son and wife slept on the dinnette bed. I wouldn't sleep there with another person but they claim they did just fine. 3 year old grand daughter slept on the cockpit floor just fine. One other adult slept on the couch below me. I was 190 lbs at the time and it held me, no groaning, creaking or sagging. I would suggest making sure the straps are in good condition and fastened properly to the underside of the bunk. At first I thought climbing up there would be a pain but you can get there from the cockpit floor just behind the drivers seat and getting down is simply swinging down to the floor. Just watch out who might be below first. I slept in a sleeping bag. It's not the Holiday Inn but I'll volunteer to sleep up there anytime. We don't have cabinets above the couch and are thinking about it for extra storage. However, they would make sleeping on the top bunk a bit more challenging for an adult, kids probably no problem. We haven't decided yet on those. We need to use the coach more to see just what we like or dislike.

7 of us including 4 adults may travel in the coach and the bunk bed is a most definite plus.

Hope to get the coach out a lot more this summer. So far so good, the kids love it and can't wait to go places in it.

Peer,

Try a magnet to locate the hangers for the bunk bed. I checked my 77 and they are steel. A strong magnet should tell you where they are if they are there.

wide

Peer,

The bunk hooks are 1" (2.54 cm) wide, extend down 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) with no ceiling panel.
The locations: front hook is 3-3/4" (9.52 cm) from center of front roof rib to center of hook, between hook centers is 52" (132.08 cm).
And 11-1/2" (29.21 cm) from ceiling center line.
The hooks are 1/8" x 1" x 2-3/4" (.31cm x 2.54cm x 7cm), the rectangle hole for the hook is a 1/2" (1.27cm) wide x 3/4" (1.9cm) long, and 3/8" (.95cm) between hole and end of hook. The ends has radius corners.
The ones on mine are chromed, you can make your own, 2 each 3/16" (4.7mm) pop rivets is what's holding them in place. The rivet holes may be already in the ceiling bracket. Sorry but the front 2 ceiling panel need to come down to install the hooks.
There's also a ceiling cover plate held on with 2 flat head screws to dress the area.

Hope this is the info you're looking for.

It would help answer you if you told us what year your motorome is. They changes the support system in about 76 or early 77.

Why don't you just remove one of the holding strips for the ceiling panel at the front of the sofa area. You can then pull the panel down enough to look inside or feel inside with your hand.

That'll really be fun

Here is another idea for one in the cockpit. The 3yr old might even go in under !

Along the line that Bob said. A stud finder would most likely work as
