Hi John, from what you describe it sounds like a frozen pulley on the a/c
compressor and or frozen compressor altogether. Let us all know what you
fing out please.

sorry , i have not been able to follow
but
if it is a stock , gmc, with stock belts, you can just
cut the belt off and go on without ac until you have time to fix the
problem.

Before I left for work this morning, I took a look at the belts and confirmed the AC belt is worn more than the other belts - far more. As worn as it is it should be replaced, I would think. When I get home, I will take Gene's suggestion first and simply cut it off. If that is the issue, it's diagnosed and I know where to go next. If, after cutting the belt out, the noise is still there, we have more things to check. The belt would have to replaced in any event.

As always, I very much appreciate the warm regard shared by most on this forum. I have lurked here for seven years and felt well able to judge my recent attempt at picking out a good coach.

Thank you all

John

Well, that was rather anti-climactic. Fretted all day that I had bought into some aggravating issue (I am sure those will come in time). Got home, snipped the A/C belt. The belt was stuck to the pulleys. After wrestling the belt off, I gave the two pumps to the gas pedal and the engine fired right up. No noise other than the desired whirring, rumbling and happy big block singing that "red neck lullaby."

After realizing my worst fears were just that fears, I shut the engine down and put a wrench on the A/C compressor. No big surprise, it was not moving for love or money. I will put a working dash air system down on my bucket list of fixes after the bearings, brakes and lines, fuel lines, quad bags, etc.

The coach has three roof A/Cs so I'm not too worried as long as the barbarian keeps running in the back.

Thank you very much to all those who contributed to the diagnostic and expedient fix.

John
