I've got a 1978 Royale with a propane water heater. I think it's original. When I hit the ON switch under the sink the light flashes on, there's a noticeable "click" and then the light turns off. It seems to be a short or over ride safety maybe? Anyone ever had this issue? The engine pre-heat works and the tank holds water, but I can't get the propane side to work because of this issue. The PO had the in-line fuse up in front by the battery pulled out so it's likely been an issue for a while. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, we had hot water for a couple outings. Now something new is happening. When I turn on the water heater it clicks, the ignition lights the burner, the heater runs for about 10 seconds and then shuts off. The ignition clicks rapidly about 5 or six times and then the light comes on indicating a failure to ignite. I cleaned the thermocouple and repeated. problem persisted. Is there another part of the system causing this problem, or is it still tied to the thermocouple?

Dave,
I have had a similar problem with the propane hot water heater in my 78 Royale. I get no light or clicking when I engage the switch. All fuses in the fuse blocks are good. I was not aware of the inline fuse near the battery that was mentioned. I will have to track that down and check it. My specific heater has as "Pilot" setting on the control knob. I have been able to set it to pilot and manually light it with lighter. Once lit, the pilot stays on and the heater functions as normal and cycles on and off when needed. I am just not able to light it from inside the coach. It is on my list of things to figure out. I don't know of any harm in lighting it manually, just inconvenience. My understanding is that some models are electronic ignition and do not have a pilot light.

To clean the jet, use only air, liquid, or a nylon mono filament line -- NO
metal!

The water heater is functional again! I cleaned it as you suggested, but I didn't notice any debris. On the day I had trouble with it we had received 2 1/2 inches of rain and it was super humid out side. Not sure if that could mess with things or if the trip home cleared up the problem. Regardless, its working again and I appreciate your help very much.
