A friend in the Chicago area ( Lombard ) is interested in getting a GMC. His wife has concerns that if they were on the road with a GMC. They might get robbed. We've only had our 78 Royale for 11 years. I've never heard of that happening. Anyone have some input on this, that I could pass on. For me. I just widened the door by 7 inches. Their stout. I now know that to be a fact. With the tinted windows. They would have a problem knowing where you were in there. If they broke a window. Good luck climbing in. There high off the ground. They'd had to have planned a head. And brought a ladder with them. Crooks aren't that bright to think that out. And the biggy. If there was a problem in the area. Go to the drivers seat. And leave. Their certainly NOT going to stand in front of the bumper.

What's the difference in potential to be robbed in the GMC versus anything else they could travel in?
My response is one of the favorite overall responses in the Bimmerforums' OT forum: "This is why I carry."
Why fire up the coach and take off, ripping apart connected water, electrical, and dump lines when two to the chest will suffice?

Bob,
I have not heard of any GMCer being robbed in their coach. It doesn’t matter what brand or make of coach if they want to rob or cause damage to the coach then it could happen. The wife appears to be a little paranoid. We have always parked our coach in areas that are safe. Most of the time we are in a RV campgrounds. I only do Walmart's when I am with others.

If they're that concerned perhaps they should just stay home.
But, then what about all the home invasions we read about in the press. Probably more statistically likely than a MOHO break in regardless of make.
The wife probably doesn't think the GMC is cool enough and the break in issue is just the smoke screen.

Bob,
The closest we ever came was while attending a reunion of the USAF fighter
squadron I was in in Charleston, SC. The Holiday Inn (IIRC) where the
reunion was held is in a now-decrepit area of N. Charleston, near the
airport, which was then, and I suppose is now, a joint-use field with USAF.
One night when we returned to the coach, which was parked in the motel
parking lot, we found the entry door handle standing out at about a 15*
angle from normal. It had been forced into that position but had not
allowed entry without the key.
We used the key and went our merry way. I later forced the handle back
into near-normal positon, as you see it here:

We learned the next day that a couple of workmen who'd had tools stowed in
their pickups lost them, probably to the same low-life that attacked the
GMC unsuccessfully.
To help allay your friend's wife's fears, he may want to get one of Frank
Jenkins's fiberglass replacements for the padded caps on the ends of the
cabinets. They're hollow and hinged for handy handgun stowage.

No, but I had a bad scare walking into the rest room at a rest area on I81 about 2am several years ago. I've carried ever since.

Keep in mind the paranoid mentality of Illinois people within 50 miles of Chicago. No one is allowed to carry a gun and they rely on the gov't (police) to protect them. Not everyone is this way but a lot of them are. Lombard is not a high crime area, it is a far west suburb of Chicago (about 22 miles) but they see the nightly news of the Cook County crime problems. 45 people were shot and 9 killed over Easter the week end just within the city limits of Chicago. We are only 37 air miles from the the center of Chicago but it is a different world. Most of these Illinois people can not understand us not locking house doors or leaving the keys in our cars here.
That said, we have only had one small issue in a GMC and it would have been the same if it had been in a car, truck, or motor home. My daughter and I stopped at an O'Reilly auto parts store and I parked across a side street due to the size of the vehicle. It was in some town out west. I think it was in New Mexico.
While I was in the store, some guy came up and tried to get in the coach. Heather met him at the door with her .380 and the guy quickly retreated. It turned out he was a local drunk. We later observed him about 1/2 block down the street barely able to walk.

I have parked in lots of Walmarts. They are great places to park because Walmart is very concerned with the security of their patrons. I have been in two with all night security and both said feel free to park and we will tell the security people to keep an eye out for you and not bother you.

Walmart wrlcomes motorhomes in many of its parking lots. Ive never had any

The Police Chief in Chicago stated "If they (the general assembly) passes concealed Carry my people (cops) will be shooting innocent civilians".

Had a few guys looking for gas to "get back home" at gas stations (usually
Pilots) and had some teens hit us with a couple of eggs in BC,
After a long drive we parked late at night at a mall in Orillia , Ontario.
Had a car circle us a couple of times while my wife was brushing her
teeth...I got off the coach and drove off in my underwear. That in itself
may have been enough to change the course of his life but we will never
know...cause I left!
Keep the door locked and the key in the ignition so you don't have to go
rummaging through your trousers if you're in a rush to move on.
Never a problem deep into Mexico.
