I have a coach that I am going to pick up this week that has a bunch of issues. One of them is missing ignition key. I am going to take a bunch of keys of units that i have hoping to get lucky and it will turn the cylinder but I am not holding out alot of hope. Is there a way to have a key made for that unit by the VIN#? I hate to take a slide hammer to it and the closest locksmith is 40 miles away. Any ideas?
Thanx. David

David,
The solution is as easy as replacing the igition lock cylinder. They can be purchased at most major autoparts complete with two keys. The task of replacement is just a bit more involved than removing the steering wheel. You can google the procedure, but I'm sure someone will describe it here. I don't recall the exact procedure as it has been several years since I did mine, so I don't want to provide erroneous info.

Carefully search all compartments which do not require a key to open. Bet there is a hide a key on it somewhere. I have a column in a jig for my gauge pod project bet left my puller set at work or I'd pull the tilt down a little and see I the ignition comes out w/o a key. Been so long since I've been in a column this old I cannot remember if a key is needed to release the cyl.

A key is required, but I suspect a big screwdriver with a pair of vicegrips on it would do the same thing.

To get it somewhere within striking distance of a locksmith, I would just hotwire the thing and drive it.

There's usually a key hanging behind the frig somewhere.

I replaced min in the AUTOZONE parking lot. It took about 10 minutes with the tools that I borrowed for free from them.

The problem in your case is I believe you need to turn the key lock assembly to the run position in order to remove it.

If it were I would borrow tools from AZ and remove the steering wheel. Then remove the steering wheel locking assembly.

Then there is a pull rod that runs down the inside of the column to the switch that is mounted on the bottom of the steering column. Disconnect the rod at the switch and run the switch manually. Now you can start and drive the coach without the key.

I would contact Chuck Boyd who knows these things inside and out and ask him if there is a way to get that cylinder out without turning it to run. Or ask it if there is something inside the column that you can break to allow the cylinder to turn for removal.

There were key numbers supplied to the Original purchaser. If you can find anything in the records of the coach with the numbers, you can get a new key punched up at most GM dealers.

I didn't have any keys for my coach and swapped out the lock cyl without issue. Unfortunately I don't recall exactly what was involved.

David,

I'm no expert on the steering column, but still have some suggestions: I'd
be afraid of damaging other parts of the column if I removed the lock
cylinder without a key. And I don't think you can turn the steering wheel
even if you disconnect the link from the lock cylinder to the bottom of column
switch to start the engine.

My suggestion is to refer to this excellent steering column dissertation
and follow it only down to the lock cylinder -- a not-very-difficult task:

http://www.gmceast.com/technical/Sowers_Steering_Column_Upgrade_Repair.pdf

Buy a new cylinder, with keys, at 'most any parts store.

I didnt check for a spare anywhere yet but doubt it has one. It belonged to a guy who never registered it. He lived in it in his grandmas driveway till the neighbors complained and then wound up in prison. Grandma died and the house is going to closing next week. The onan was stolen out of it and the glass is out on some windows. Its strange, with these units there is usually some parts or records or something. Even if the drawers and over heads were cleared out there might be some thing under the seats or under the reefer or even around the lp tank. Alot of times there are the parts to fix a problem that the coach has. There was nothing in this coach. It was picked clean. Well there was one thing under the sofa. An oil pump. That warmed my heart. Now Im going to get a unit with no keys. no title, with an unknown oil pump and drive it back to Florida a 1000 miles. Was hoping for a trick. On the bright side its an easy get as opposed to the unit I got to get 30 miles down the road.
Thanx. David

David,

As many coaches as you've "rescued" over long distances, you must have had
a lot of road adventures -- which you haven't shared with us. True to the
"man bites dog" axiom, we like to hear of troubles, but pleasant events are
interesting too. :-)

Please share your travels.

Buy a stated value policy and then have it accidentally catch on fire, fly home.

Seriously though, the loser may not have hid a key but the po might have. I found two nice sets in The Pig during the renovation. Propane compartment as well as a set hidden inside( I guess to let yourself out😜).

No disassembly below the ign cyl will release the lock pin as it is triggered by the location of the cyl. You could however remove the steering wheel and wedge the lock pin or even better, bring another plate that goes under the circlip loading the tilt spring. Only the one you bring will have been cut or ground to a smaller od so the lock notches are missing and thus the lock pin will not engage. Then you can old school hotwire it w/O smashing shit.

Ken. If I told you everything Id never get off here. Something happens every 50 miles. The first bunch of units I got I went thru and replaced belts and checked hose and would spend hours getting them ready to go and 50 miles down the road something would be wrong. Now I cut the fuel line about 3" from the carb and hook a jump tank with an electric pump, air up the bags and tire and crank her over. 9 times out of 10 they start right up. Sometimes I got bang on the qjet with a hammer to loosen it up. I let it run for 10 mins and throw her in gear. If she moves I and stops I put my traveling tires on her and go. Drive to the nearest gas station and give her the once around and if shes not hissing, bleeding or throwing up then I roll south. I stop every 50 miles cause the jump is only 9 gals. There is always something that needs attention. If I go 2-300 miles with no issues I strat to get nervous. It is nerve racking. Im constantly trying to listen for anything. If I hear something I try to imagine what might be making that new noise Im hearing. I got to say that every time I start one of these and drive it for the first time I love them even more. I just delivered a coach for JimB out to Texas that he had re done a while ago. It was a really nice unit with only 5k miles on her. It drove really nice but I have had $500 units that have driven just as smooth. Ive got to get Mike Stewarts unit in SC next week and thats gonna be an adventure since it doesnt have a wind shield. Also got one that is 300' out in the middle of a swamp that Im gonna have to build a bridge to get it out. Any of you out there that want to join me on one of my trips let me know. In the next week Ill be in LA, SC, MA PA and Vegas. California date coming soon!

Joe Ekl (Mister Lock and Key) told us once that few if any of the GMC dealers still have books that go back far enough to give the key numbers for our coaches.

So, when time came to move the coach that Frank Sundrum acquired to my property, (no title, keys or history) I just swapped out the column cylinder with the one that Chuck Boyd had sent me. It was not all that tough. I still have the nice instructions that he wrote - someplace (I hope - that was two HDD crashes ago).

The only damage I did was to the steering wheel. I didn't know that some have screws from behind that hold the horn ring.
