Tires were the worst thing I'd ever seen. $2,100 to replace all six. On top
of the 4900$ price.

Disappointed and tired.

On the other hand, discretion is the better part of valor. Or "Know when to
walk away, know when to run."

Good decision. Now you won't have to deal with getting rid of it once you've finished. Just rent and if it breaks down call them to come bring you another.

I'm a fan of trailers. If you had one of your coaches road ready with a hitch it would make for a great way to travel. I'd guess your Pontiac could pull the whole house, but that might not be the best combination.

Sorry to hear about the truck. Does your firm offer any moving assistance?

Robin,

GOOD MOVE!

For the hell of it I got a quote to rent a '26 foot truck from Penske and drive it from Jackson, MS to Jacksonville, FL. The basic
cost was $708. It's about 600 mile and at 6 mpg that works out to 100 gallons @ $3.50 per gallon you're looking at around a minimum
of $1058 one way. I reckon to be safe you could do it in 2 days so add a motel room to that which would bring it up to around $1150.

I know that you and your family are going to be doing a lot of moving but in my opinion you'd be better off trying to work a deal
with some truck rental company for multiple rentals rather than buy a truck. I wonder what kind of truck you're going to find that's
in your price range that you can RELY on to make it without problems! All you'd need is to have it break down while you're in route
and you'll be stuck with having to fix it. As you learned from this example trucking companies DON'T sell their GOOD trucks!

I assume you intend to flog the truck when you're done with the moves. That will take time and effort. Keep in mind that you're in a
new job and in my opinion your energy would be better expended making a good impression on your new employers!

Regards,
Rob M.

PS - Once again I've probably demonstrated I have an ACUTE grasp on the OBVIOUS! ;-)

The first time I moved, I loaded all my stuff into the back of my Toyota pickup and moved. The second time it was just across town, and took 7 loads in that Toyota pickup.

The last time I moved it took 2 tractor trailer loads. Half of it was stuff we didn't need, but the CFO didn't want to sort it all out.

To clarify:

Clear out Moms house, taking her things 100 miles to where she is now so
her house can go on the market soon.

Clear out my house so the contractors can repaint and install the new floor
and remodel so our house can go on the market.

Move older sister out of state with her new musing job.

Move our things to Jacksonville.

The two out of state moves renting trucks will run around two grand, maybe
$2500. The other stuff maybe $500. Call it three grand.

If I buy a truck for 4 or 5 grand, use it, I can sell it for around what I
paid, and not worry about how long im keeping it.

The truck itself represents actual wealth, and the flexibility and peace of
mind it provided has value. It can be converted back into dollars fairly
easily.

Or, I can just hemorrhage money to Uhaul or Penske.

Rental costs are tax deductions as moving expenses. Take yours for move to Jacksonville, take sisters for her move to her new job. Absorb cost of moving mother. Moving expenses include night's on road, miles driven, and cost of meals. Include house hunting trip, and you at least begin to recover some of your costs. House repairs prior to sale also go under "house selling expense". Keep good records.

U-haul renting tip (Sorry Bob) Call U-haul and reserve a truck for the dates that you want, then several weeks before, cancel the rental. U-haul will call you back in a few days with a lower rate. When thy call stall them with any excuse like you need to get someone else's approval or you are getting a quote form Penske. They will call again, and again. Each time with a lower rate. We ended up at almost 1/2 of the original quote on a one way rental.

Robin,

LISTEN TO DANA!

As you've noted many times before, she's one hell of a catch! ;-)

I reckon she's got her feet planted on the ground better than you! ;-)

No problem Ken--we do price match if you get a quote ftom Penske or Budget if they are lower. Right now with gasoline cheaper than diesel, you will also save with U-Haul.

I'm picking up my 14 ft UHaul truck and auto transport for the big wedding next weekend. 1948 Buick on the auto trailer and nothing in the truck. I weighed the options and decided it was worth the money to let UHaul worry about breakdowns, etc. Thanks, Bob, for your help in making this happen.

You're welcome. You should at least put a cooler of beer in that empty 14 ft truck to get the right weight balance Smile

One of the guys where I picked up the keys today suggested I pick up a truckload of Vidalia onions. I'll pass pretty close to Vidalia but don't want to deal with that. Enough on my plate.

Stick, run over to Texarkana and load that sucker up with Coors. Use the
Buick for a jam car. Run for the border. (Grin)

Tires were the worst thing I'd ever seen. $2,100 to replace all six. On top of the 4900$ price.

Disappointed and tired.

On the other hand, discretion is the better part of valor. Or "Know when to walk away, know when to run."

It is too late now, but what kind of rim mandates a $300 tire?
