I started in yesterday putting my drum recaction arm kit on my coach. I got the passenger side apart and cleaned, and the lead wheel kit on and buttoned up. Gonna rain tomorrow evening, if I get the holes countersunk Tuesday evening, I'll hang the kit wednesday evening and button it. Then if I can get the old brake lines loose, I can complete the passenger side. Turn the coach around and go for the driver's side, hopefully finish it by next Sunday night. Ready for Bean Station. Thoughts on the kit (from Applied):

Good instructions. You might could screw it up, but you got to try.
Everything fits so far.
The cutter wants a 1/2" drill, a 1/4 or 3/8ths won't work. (I picked up a big B&D down to the pawn shop for $40).
I'm doing the brakes as well, new cyinders, shoes, hardware.
The kit is short a couple of pieces, the condition of the boxes when it got here make me believe they're in a FedEx truck someplace. I'll get replacements headed out tomorrow.
Given the effort, it ought to stop on silver coinage and give chaqnge. If it doesn't, I will be S.P. (Sore Pist)
And, there's a new BWD to supervise. I would of put up a picture, but theres a 1075byt limit.

Well, Johnny boy, ye’re a better man than I. 7 days and counting on my reaction arm install and still not finished.

For the uninformed, Johnny Bridges gave up a weekend and came to Americus to assist with the Manny RA install. Although we short-changed Johnny on his drink of choice, a good time was had by all.

After Johnny left for parts north on Sunday last, I continued working under the critical, yet helpful, eye of the owner of the rack and tools and spare parts, Ken Henderson.

Truthfully, I’ve depended way too much on Ken and others for my mechanical needs. After Johnny left, apparently Ken determined that it was time for my baptism of fire.

So Monday through Saturday I’ve toiled away. I’m pitifully slow, but I’m learning. I’ve made some mistakes but none fatal (so far). I mangled a brake line but there’s one on the way from Manny. I mis-drilled a couple of holes in the frame, but corrected my mistake.
My body aches, but for the first time in my brief mechanical history, I feel like I’ve learned something I’m not likely to forget. If my 65 year old shoulders and knees and lower back would cooperate, I think I could do a better job next time. I have learned a lot.

I’m taking a 3 day break for a couple of meetings at my condo. My bones are tired, but come Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning, I’ll be back at it. I’m down to reinstalling one brake line, bleeding the brakes, adjusting the parking caliper and mounting the wheels. I’m going to re-torque everything just to make sure.

Today, reaction arm...tomorrow, I conquer my Onan.

There’s just no way to adequately thank my partners in crime so I won't try.

Be very grateful that you didn't stay with you lust for a Blue Bird
Wanderlodge. Why? I firmly believe you would have committed some form of
suicide by now. At least with the GMC you only hurt yourself
temporarily. Glad to know you're getting grease on your knuckles.

That Johnny B. came to help is truly amazing. That Ken H. is there to
crack the whip is a good thing, I guess. I know he'll have stories to
tell about you. Of course, we all have stories to tell on ourselves
without the help of others.

A chance to learn at someone else's coach before tackling mine. And it takes maybe 45 seconds of interaction to see why Ken made Full Bird and I only got to Masterful Sergeant. The man's a compendium of knowledge about these old toys. I covet his shop. The land slopes past my garage, Ken's setup has me measuring it.....

Nothing surprising about it to me. Johnny has given up more than one day up at Lake Lanier helping me with my Onan. All it cost me was a visit to the Chinese Buffet.

That's a little too thick: I retired as a Lt.Col. :-)

How's your installation going? Good thing you didn't come here over the
weekend: Stick's coach is still on the rack. Manny had to send us a new
flex hose after we damaged the banjo fitting on one and couldn't stop the
leak. Stick's in Panama CIty until tomorrow, so the new one that arrived
yesterday is just setting here. Too wet & cold out for me to fool with it.

I have a small collection of old phonographs. In a stack of WWI '78s there is a song entitled: "Would you rather be a colonel with an eagle on your shoulder or a private with a chicken on your knee?"

Just so it doesn't look like I've abandoned the project in Americus, further explanation is needed. I serve on a condo board here in PC. Doing so places me on about the 3rd level of Hell. I'm committed through October and try to make the meetings in person as possible. Not slacking off - it is cold and rainy here too - just doing what I committed to.

Now, let's fix some GMCs.

Did you happen to take any pieces and parts away from Ken so his son won't
have the job of cleaning up when Ken kick the bucket?

He does have quite a setup and a large inventory of stuff. I don't think
he has it all catalogued digitally, yet. Maybe he'll do it when he gets a
round tuit. Hah.

No pictures. Actually, Americus reminds me of the Prattville I grew up in many years ago, small genteel Southern town. They're a dying breed unfortunately. It would take many tens of thousands of dollars to duplicate the tools, much less the extra parts, Ken knows where all of it is. Job Security, I expect.

Anent the various grades of Colonel it is a grin - Maxwell AFB, home of the Air University, is about ten miles from my childhood home, consequently I grew up amongst service brats and a full bull Colonel was simply one more guy on the street - dime a dozen there. He had to stand in line for his coffee mornings like everybody else.
For the unfamiliar, an AF officer headed for a star or two will see Maxwell either in person or via correspondence three different times in his career, once for Squadron Officer's School, once for Air War College, and once for Staff and Command School. For some years I had the contract to maintain the language lab machines there, and the P.A. system in the SAGE blockhouse across town at Gunter AFB. To say rank doesn't impress me by itself is an understatement, but guys like Ken certainly do - the epitome of what the services look for.

Well, today I met via phone the Sage of Brakes. My kit was short a couple peices, which pieces I suspect FedEx dropped along the way. I'd called Applied, and Nick says 'call this number, get the pieces quicler.' Which I did, they're headed out second day tomorrow, no charge - I would have paid but he wouldn't hear of it. How's the kit? I said other than the PIA of countersinking the spindle mount bolts, goes good and goes easy. The immediate response "You aren't pushing hard enough. You should be peeling off pieces like a wood chisled removes. Lean into it." So, whathehell, he's the Sage. I modified the supplied wood and plastic lever by using a longer piece of pvc to get behind my longer drill. Got a knee against it with the drill set, and honked down on it below 500 RPM as advised. In less than ten minutes including stringing the extension cord and setting up the new lever and taking a bolt for testing off the fixture as well as drilling, I peeled two perfect countersinks. I didn't do the last two on the passenger side, cos it's 38 degrees out and the wind os 35-40 mph steady gusting to 55. It took most of a couple of days to do the first one. I anticipate two hours to finish this one, the bulk being assembling the new brake shoes and hardware. Four hours total to do the driver's side, including jacking abnd cribbing.
I'm sold on the kit, supplier, and instructions.

Not likely to adjust my driving style, I can act the fool in my toad. However, I expect fewer moments of terror in Atlanta traffic when the krill pull in front of me and then lay on the brakes. The savings in laundry soap for underwear should offset the cost of the kit.
The only thing that concerns me is getting the old brake lines out of the tee line without ruining it. I think they'll come along, cos the lines themselves are no longer needed. They're clipped short, if they turn with the nut it won't matter as long as the nut backs out. I expect a couple of Stilson <tm> wrenches will back it out. If it wrings off, new tee hose and if necessary a splice in the hardline. It'll get there.

Those have been my secret weapon for years. I actually carry my collection (all three) in the coach kit. They can heave on a line nut until your arm gives out and not blow the hex.
