After saying goodby to my step son and his family on Sunday March 30th. My wife and I departed for home. Going through Fort Worth on Hy 287 I noticed the generator light was on. We got through Fort Worth and stopped for gas. I opened the compartment door and saw that I had a frayed alternator belt. Replaced the belt and off we went again. 60 miles down the road a cross wind blew the passenger side hood up. My wife was driving at the time and she pulled over so I could latch it down. Once back in my seat she started to go forward and we heard this loud knocking coming from the engine. We pulled into an abandoned gas station just down the road from where we had pulled over. After a few hours of trying this and that I determine that the knock was coming from a main bearing. It was getting late and had to figure out what the best course of action to take. Got my Black Book out and started looking for someone in the area. No one within 80 miles. Got in touch with Emery and was able to find a previous GMC owner and past member of the GMC Classic Club. I contacted Sid and told him of my situation and he without any hesitation said I could park my GMC on his property until I could return with another motor to swap out. We slept that night on the property of the gas station and called a wrecker the next morning. AAA sent out a semi wrecker to transport us to Sid's place. As the driver position the wrecker in front of the GMC I was questioning his method of how he was going to tow my GMC, explaining if he tries to raise the GMC by the cross member he could damage the radiator or the bumper. His comment was "where there's a will there is a way". Now I was not to happy with this and called triple AAA to explain my concerns. They suggested to call the tow company and talk to someone there. Just as I ready to call, the driver came up to me and asked for me to take a look at how he was going to raise the coach up. He had position two tall forks to grab the frame along the side of the radiator. The forks were tall enough for the main frame of the raising bar of the tow truck to clear radiator and bumper when the GMC was raised. I was satisfied at this and he proceeded to position the forks. He tried for 20 minutes and not satisfied with the results he got out another set of forks that grabbed the cross member and sway bar together. Now we are on our way. Slowly and carefully he drives ahead and gets going down the road. As we got to Sid's place he said he could not make the turn into Sid's driveway. We unlatched the GMC and as the driver approached me to sign the bill he asked me if I wanted to hear a funny story. I said sure. He said that this was the first time that he had driven this rig and it was his first motor home that he has towed. I was dumbfounded and thanked him for doing a great job and he drove off to his next tow- another motor home.

Bruce,

I can't help but admire your ability to make a 'Funny Story" out of a Main
Bearing Failure!

I kept hoping you'd find the old V-belt banging on something. I'll keep
hoping it's really something that simple and not a Motor Pulling Exercise
(I've had TOO many of those).

Bruce,

I realize that it's a bit too late but here's a link to a document that discusses how to and how NOT to tow a GMC:

Ken,
I spent a couple of hours trying to locate the knock, removed v-belts, fan,
fan clutch, and spark plugs to determine if it was anything other than a
main bearing but the knock was loud with a deep tone. I was also consuming
more oil than on a previous 1400 round trip that we took last year. In the
1500 miles I added 6 quarts of oil, so I was in need of some engine work
anyway.
The gal that I sold the parts for also has a rebuilt engine that she needs
to dispose of. So it was another win win situation for her and me.
I have enough extruded aluminum to make a motor stand and was thinking that
it might be a good idea to break in the flat tappet cam before I hall it
700 miles to Texas to install. That way if any issues come up I can deal
with it before installing in the coach. I also have an ace up my sleeve as
Bill Bramlett is only 20 miles away from me.

Rob, I was aware of the towing guide but I didn't have a copy of it with
me. As the driver stated where there is a will there is a way. The forks
he used had enough height to them to simulate the spacing under the cross
member that the 2x2 would have created. The driver than used heavy chain
to secure cross member to the spreader bar. This driver was extremely
careful in aligning the forks. Once underway the driver took 3 miles of
road to get up to 60 mph. Slow, smooth and easy.

70 MPH for the 50 mile maiden trip home - interstate for all but 5 miles.

As entertaining as that was, the bet with the tow truck driver that it was a front wheel drive motorhome, was better.

Of course, both times I have been towed have been with new rigs that grab the front tires to lift.

Bruce, I had no idea that you had to leave the coach in Texas. I guess you rented a car so you could head home. I hate to hear it. But, as so many have found, the Black List is worth much more than money can pay. Great on the rebuilt and Bill Bramelett. That is one nice couple to live close by. Please keep us posted.

Appie,

Here, the tow trucks are generally restricted to the same speed limits as
any other truck -- and don't pay much attention to that. 70 mph is a
typical tow speed in my not inconsiderable experience.

Rob, you might want to have your towing guide added to the files that will be put on the GMC memory stick (Swiss Army Knife)

In this case the Black List didn't help but the GMCMI membership roster did the job.

But, as so many have found, the Black List is worth much more than money can pay. Great on the rebuilt and Bill Bramelett. That is one nice couple to live close by. Please keep us posted.

Bruce,

Remember the American Express Credit Card ad:

The Black List
Towing Guide
Maintenance Manual
Parts Book
GMCMI Parts Interchange Index

Don't leave home without them! ;-)

Rob, you might want to have your towing guide added to the files that will be put on the GMC memory stick (Swiss Army Knife)

Well Emery, maybe he got your phone number from the Black List then you used the member roster. If so, two good deals. No matter, he found you and you put him in touch with someone that could help. Having a major breakdown along side the road can be very stressful. Having a gmc friend on the phone can really calm the situation. : Smile

Dan, through the channels of the great GMC network it payed off. One phone
call led to another and by what ties us all together good things come
about. I can't imagine ever being able to repay Sid but I can pay it
forward to the next person in need.

Another ace up my sleeve occurred today. I retired after 39 years....:-)

Congrats on your retirement! I'm still a nubie at it myself.

Sid and Rosalee are a neat couple. He was the first and only person I ever
saw with a Chevy SSR for a toad. WOW! Pretty cool for an architect.

Sid at 83 retired last year and does small projects. He is an accomplished
artist and is now doing bronze sculptures. At 60 he and Rosalee built
their house in true western tradition with the pots and pans hanging from
the ceilings of the kitchen. Very impressive couple.
