Has anyone tried using a frame mounted battery box on their coach as a means of adding or relocating the batteries?
I'm thinking that the boxes used on the diesel Ford E-350 cube vans might make a suitable candidate, but I do not know if there is room on the outside of the rail to mount them with creating an eyesore or safety issue. I can't check on my coach because the frame is out from under it.
These are the boxes I'm thinking of:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/electrical/p54069-econoline-diesel-battery-box.html
And I have looked at frame photos and can't find anything that gives enough detail to say yeah or neah.
This is the best photo I found of the outside frame area:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showfull.php?photo=25709
I think that the box would likely hang a bit below the frame, but without dimensions of the box, it is hard to know how much below. Due to the width of the box, it may also conflict with the lower body panel, but again hard to tell as I have no dimensions to work with.
I also realize that servicing a battery mounted in one of these will be more difficult, as it will likely require lowering the entire box.
Thoughts, comments?

Why not just buy Odyssey batteries? I bought some scrap diamond deck plate for $9 and made a new battery tray that holds 2 LARGE Odyssey batteries and if I put 2 of them in the generator compartment I'll be good for EMF.

Neat idea. I'm afraid that they will be too tall. I'll wait to see what the actual clearance measurement is. I wonder if someone makes longer flatter batteries.

Thanks Gene,
I was already aware of them as well as what JimK sells. In most situations, they are the perfect solution.
I was thinking more for the boondockers looking to add additional batteries, or someone who want to use the existing battery locations for something else.

Thats nice Mike, glad it works for you, and hopefully your contribution will help others as well, but it doesn't provide any answers to my questions.

For Boondocking I use two golfcart batteries on a Ragusa battery tray in the front from Applied GMC. I also have 2 more in the back next to Onan. Four batteries total.

It was a suggestion. If I can install AGM batteries in the stock locations, away from road debris, water etc and get the same result as that which you get by spending however much money, time and work...I'm voting for KISS.
But, you do what you need to fulfil your aspirations.

Mike,
I asked a question to which you have not provided any answer. You have provided criticism and your opinion on what you feel is the right way to do the job. That is fine it your right to do so, but if you had taken a minute to think about the possibilities surrounding the idea, you may have realized that the idea could provide us with a variety of advantages. One being we could gain additional external storage space by vacating the existing battery trays. It never hurts to explore new ideas, especially those that use a ready made component from the men's mall.
Of course you are smarter and more skilled than many of us so you can build your projects your way. Doesn't mean your way is the only way.
Do you feel that we should all keep our ideas to ourselves?

Thanks Bill,
I was thinking mid way between front and center axles tucked up as high as possible on the outside of the frame rail.
I need the horizontal dimension from the outside of the frame rail to the inside bottom edge of the outer body skin where it hangs down to hide the frame. I'm not sure that dimension is wide enough to squeeze a battery up in there.
On my coach I am considering a 2" body lift, so that would possibly give me just enough height to fit a battery box without it hanging too low.

Did it on a raised roof dodge van I had but I think they would hang down pretty good on the gmc. So you mean on the main frame rail between the wheels?
You have about 7" bottom of frame rail to floor, and about 9" to ground.
Here's some group sizes, I left the cables long enough so I could drop the battery to the ground to service and clean connections easy.
Here's a group size chart.

Les,
First of all I think this is worth investigating.
Here's a photo I found on the photo site:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/1973-sequoia-tze063v101455/p48036-1973-gmc-sequoia-260-ebay-item-111027298421.html
The frame is 6 inches tall and as a SWAG I'd say the distance from the frame to the inside of the body curve is about the same maybe
a bit more. I doesn't appear to be "wide / deep / tall" enough to accommodate a battery in a box. It might be possible to fit a side
terminal battery on a shelf if it was a sealed gel cell that didn't require servicing.
I note that all the batteries in the list Bill provided were over 6 inches tall and would hang down below the frame. That worries
me, wouldn't it be better to locate it as close to the middle wheel as possible?

NO, it was a SUGGESTION, you know....you want to do this....but why not consider this alternative. If I had wanted to criticize I would have said the following:
'that's a stupid idea, why go to all that trouble, work , expense only to place your batteries is a vulnerable location that makes it more difficult to service them when you could spend the same money or less and get better batteries placed where you can actually work on them.'
THAT would be criticism.
Well, BURT (does that stand for Big Ugly Round Thing?) just read your post in it's entirety and no, I'm not smarter or more skilled than everyone here but I'll wager you are most likely sucking hind-tit.
You're so damned smart, why did you not research the idea, do a cost analysis, estimate the additional service hours needed, do a SWAG on increased probability of damage due to road debris and draw your own conclusion?
Les Burt wrote on Fri, 28 March 2014 15:17 | Mike,
I asked a question to which you have not provided any answer.

But, you do what you need to fulfil your aspirations.

Thanks again Bill. Looks like my idea is a no go, and that is why this place is still a great place to seek answers. I'll have a last look at the possibility once my own coach is back on wheels.
