Sounds like good news for our CA members who can now add EFI and still pass the no-tampering rules. This from an email I received today from MSD:

El Paso,TX; March 25, 2014 - MSD Performance is excited to announce that the Atomic Fuel Injection System has been granted an Executive Order Number from the California Air Resources Board! This E.O. Number makes the Atomic the only aftermarket EFI system that is legal on 1987 and older GM vehicles in California!

The Atomic EFI system received E.O. Number D-722 which permits the system to be installed in place of the factory carburetor on 1987 and older GM passenger cars and trucks originally powered by a V8 engine. This Executive Order also means the Atomic EFI system provides "reasonable basis" for satisfying the anti-tampering requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act, thus allowing its use in all other States.

"Adding this unique benefit supports the distinctiveness of the Atomic technology devel oped by our engineering team", said Manny Grijalva, VP of Marketing and Sales. "The ongoing accolades from our consumers, car builders and the media continues to substantiate that we have the best engineered EFI system available on the market."

This is terrific news for enthusiasts with an '87 and older GM car or truck as it means they can finally do away with their old carburetor and take advantage of the driveability benefits of a modern, self-learning EFI system such as quick starts, consistent idle and smooth power throughout all driving conditions.

During thorough testing it was confirmed that the Atomic system did not reduce the effectiveness of the applicable vehicle pollution control systems and therefore was granted an exemption from the prohibitions of Section 27156 of the California Vehicle Code for 1987 and older General Motors passenger cars and pickups originally equipped with a V8 engine and carburetor. MSD will supply an information label with the E.O. Number and details that must be affixed on the vehicle for inspection purposes.

The MSD Atomic EFI system is designed for the do-it-yourself enthusiast and provides the easiest installation and initial setup for any EFI upgrade. For more information, go to AtomicEFI.com or call MSD at (915) 857-5200

One slight snag. It is designed for square bore manifolds, not spread bore like the Q-Jet. So it would need an adapter plate for the 455 which might cause height issues.

And it's over $2K!

And it cost only $2700.

As noted above...you also need to buy a new intake manifold....another $500?

But the height thing...just add a raised engine cover to take up additional room and add a trip hazard.

What do you do when the 'black-box' dies in the middle of the Rockies? Same thing I did when i tried a Mallery Unilite 40+ years ago on a BOSS-302....trash it and install the Accel dual point.

I'm not spending that much money. Kind of like changing the ring & pinion to a 3.55 or whatever guys change them to. Not worth it to me. Now, if my r&p was bad and I had to go in there I might do it but until that time I keeping what I have. I'm not driving the GMC more than 65 mph, I don't accelerate hard and I doubt I'll ever save enough money on fuel to pay for the parts. Remember the Holley throttle body systems from the 90's? Can you get parts for them now? If so, how long and how much money will it take to buy it? Q-Jets work very well and I can get parts for them anywhere...hell, I can afford to carry spares...at $3k+ for and EFI system I could carry a spare Q-Jet, HEI, water pump, brake lines, M/C, slave cylinders, etc.....and the list goes on!!!

Price might be an obsticle, but the adaptor plate only has to be about 3/8" - 1/2" thick I believe, so that's not too big a problem...

A couple of these on friends hot rods and they love them. Much nicer than the Holley systems in that a) just enter a few parameters and they pretty much self adjust, and b) the wiring is very minimal, with most ckts being buried in the throttle body covers. Not sure if ultimate performance can be totally optimized, but they sure run nice and look good. Makes it simple to install if you are not an EFI guru guy.

JMHO, nothing more...

I have gone through this on FB, Use the Howell alu intake as it has a dual pattern carb mounting, all you need is a 1/8 squarebore plate just as on Edlebrock's performer intake and you will have near stock mounting height.
