I finally had a day off where I could spend some additional time on the Onan. Thanks to many here on the net I was able to get it started and running last fall but I was still having a number of issues. I am posting my issues and their resolution only so others may benefit from them.

1. I had a very difficult time getting spark. I had tried everything I have know from working on engines my whole life. It turned out to be pretty simple. It was not getting spark because the Low Oil Pressure (LOP) circuit was preventing spark. In order to override the LOP circuit you simply disconnect the number 12 wire from the circuit board. Although great for troubleshooting and emergency operation, it is not a good idea to run on a regular basis without the protection the LOP circuit provides. Yesterday I changed the oil, oil filter, and the oil pressure sending unit (AutoZone in stock), which is located behind the cover on the right side of the unit, near the oil filter. Once the new sending unit was installed I was able to start the Onan and reconnect the number 12 wire and it is now operating correctly.

2. My starter motor would not disengage once the engine started. It would stay in contact with the flywheel. I would either have to shut it down, or pull the positive wire off the starter solenoid (mounted on the stater). While working on the LOP circuit I noticed a very lose connection on the solenoid (mounted under the circuit board). This was one of the small wire connections that had come lose. The nut and lock washer had come completely off. Once replaced and tightened down I have not experienced the starter disengage issue. I don't know for sure if this was the specific problem but they seem to be related.

3. I was never able to control the Onan from the remote panel inside the coach. Although these controls are just a simple switch and hour meter on my 78 Royle, they were not functioning. With the Onan now running really smooth and with new oil and filter I decided to trace the remote wiring. Sure enough, I was able to locate a break in both the red and blue wires. With a simple splice of these two wires I now have a fully functioning Onan with remote control!

I could not have gotten this far with Onan without the help and resources here on the forum. I am getting better at searching both the forum and the GMC photo page. I also go to bdub.net and follow the link to Gene Fisher's web site where there is a wealth of information on nearly every topic. Many thanks to Bdub, Gene and others for making this information available.

Please remember to contribute $$ to keep the forum and photo site going.

Now that the Onan is operating correctly and has fresh oil and filter I will do some longer test runs under load. My ultimate goal is to do the electronic ignition conversion which has been well documented on the photo site.

As soon as the weather warms up a little, the next system to test and troubleshoot will be the plumbing system and hot water heater.

Wish you could have been at the GMCMI convention. Jim K had his session this morning on trouble shooting the Onan.

- there was no prior information that
-JimK was going to give a tech talk
- no info as to what the other talks are
- or were
- I HOPE THEY PUBLISH THE TALKS WHERE THEY
ARE NOT HELD HOSTAGE
- could double the size of the rally if the tech were known

Steve, good job getter her running, it was nice to have a day off from winter...I have yet to wire my remote switch to the 6.5 Honda. Once I do I'll document it. Pertronics really wakes up the onan...someone on the GMCNet is adding Fuel Injection to their onan... that's cool!

Sean,
I did see pictures of the fuel injection manifold someone was making. That is really cool. So many cool projects but so little time. The one that interests me the most right now would be the 3.70 final drive. I have two trucks with 4.11 gears so I have an appreciation the performance and towing capability. While I am most interested in performance gears I will probably prioritize the fuel system first. I will be interested to see how both of your current projects work out. So many different fuel pump options.

Are you doing an electric fuel pump?

Gene,

A few points:

1. The schedule we received when we arrived shows all of the seminars, as
presented, except for one today which was swapped with tomorrow's schedule
because of an illness in today's presenter's family. I'm sure everyone
recognizes that the schedule is always flexible for such reasons.

2. To demand posting of the presentations for non-attendees is not
reasonable. To my knowledge, GMCMI has never stipulated the slides,
handouts, or other materials a presenter must provide or prepare.
Consequently, those materials are generally only sketchy supplements to
the oral presentations. Even when slides are presented, as I did during my
presentation yesterday, they would not, by themselves, provide any coherent
information -- they're simply not numerous nor complete enough to stand
alone without my talking to them. We don't have the personnel with the
skills nor the willingness to transcribe the oral presentations and the
presenters darned sure won't be persuaded to write down what they plan to
say -- especially since most, like me, probably don't really know until
they say it. Generally, slides alone aren't worth the wasted electrons to
publish them.

3. Some of our sessions are intentionally unscripted: Round table
discussions, "Ask the Experts", etc. I've personally led two such sessions
at this convention. I didn't even know I'd be leading the first, as for
neither of them did I have the faintest notion of what the topics of
discussion would be. Yet both were, IMHO, very productive, with a lot of
good information exchanged mostly between members of the audience -- who
also had no pre-conceptions of what they'd hear/say.

In other words, your recurrent requests for publications fall on deaf ears:
It ain't gonna happen for a lot of innocent reasons. You might as well
get off of GMCMI's case and quit irritating people. This is not GMCES as
it started out to be, and never will be -- nor is GMCES. The
stringent requirements
we originally tried to place on presenters were simply too demanding and
could not continue to be imposed on volunteers with nothing (i.e., career
advancement) to be gained from the extreme efforts involved.

Sounds like a very reasonable approach to me Ken. Of course I've not yet gotten into that self entitlement thing yet.

I spent 6 years as a full time instructor on technical topics. I taught a 63 school day course to new hires. It was 50% class room and 50% hands on. I used the slides (we called them transparencies) mostly with bullets to talk to and to make sure I did not skip something. The actual detail was verbal, with some black board stuff. The slides without the verbal and hands on re-enforcement were basically worthless. We use to figure that it took 10 hours to prepare 1 hours worth of presentation slides.

I also spent about 2 years writing formal technical books. These were an entirely different presentation and learning medium. Every detail had to be included in the books because the reader had no one available to answer questions, to fill in the gaps, or to further explain the topics.

What it sounds like need, or want, is a technical manual rather than the simple slides that we use as a tool during presentations.

If you feel a manual or book is a good thing and fills a need, I invite you to sit in some of these sessions that you feel are important and write down what is being presented. You then should have enough information to write a technical manual on the topic. You might even ask the presenter if you can record the audio so you have a complete reference later when writing the manual.

As a volunteer presenter, writing a manual on the topics is more than I am prepared to do. I have no problem presenting on topics that I know about, but I'm not up to writing a book on these subjects.

I sat beside him at dinner this evening. He's feeling fine -- as one can
fill when allergic to and covered in pine and other pollens. That's all
that was wrong with him when he went to the hospital yesterday. They
didn't keep him (his closest friends say they rejected him). He stayed
inside most of the day, but walked the several hundred yards to the meeting
building and back.

Highly embarrassed by the applause he received from all of us recognizing
his "recovery".

Nice attitude. Thought of making a video recording and putting it up in a members-only area of the organization's website? Or in a private area of youtube? That doesn't require any transcription effort nor cause additional nuisance work to have to be done by the presenter. The only effort required is for someone to park a camcorder on a tripod in the corner of the room and upload it afterward.

As for your attitude toward "non-attendees": I pay full dues to several GMC organizations but due to my career requirements I cannot travel halfway across the country attend rallies in person. I guess that makes me - as a "non-attendee" - a second-class member that is not entitled to benefit from the content of a rally presentation. Maybe I'll just keep the dues next year and use them instead to buy beer for the people who attend the annual work rally hosted by myself and my family.

Furthermore, as a second class member, I guess that no one would have been interested in watching a short video - in lieu of an in-person presentation - that documents how we developed a repair process for Onan field assemblies and implemented a test methodology for the repaired units. I can delete that video now and free up some hard disk space.

Jim, I think you missed the point.

This is a non-member complaining that volunteer presenters do not go through the additional effort and expense of preparing and posting presentations for non-members. The key word here is "volunteer". I feel if the individual presenter wants to go through the additional effort and expense to satisfy the non-member, then that is fine. This non-member's continual complaints of keeping information "locked-up" on members only sites are falling of deaf ears.

On the plus side this non-member has developed and posted many good presentations on several very good ideas he developed. So in his case it may look to him like this is a one way street. He he has voluntarily done this for others and his work is in the public domain. The key here is he also does his work voluntarily and that is his choice.

There is also a lot of information that is transferred by rally attendees between each other that is impractical to capture and publish. That additional information transfer is a benefit of attending these rallies.

This was never meant to disparage GMC volunteer people like you and your family for the work that you are doing on the Onan rewind project. Your additional effort to get the word out on your Onan project and your sponsorship of and work at the Hamilton Work Rally is also greatly appreciated by all.

Jim,

First, We need to talk. I will get with you when we can next. This is a red herring that get thrown out a lot by a particular non-member. But, the problem with the presentations is simply that the volunteers and available technology do not yet coincide with this group.

For an example, the Dave Lenzi shows are always great, but the problem of seeing what is going on cannot always be overcome with the available video equipment. It can at best fall into the class of "beats nothing". If it had been recorded and put up on You-Tube, it would not have gone viral, it would have gone dead. And, it was Two Hours Long. It was a good presentation, and valuable information. I will try to discuss it with you.

Many times the presenters have little to no prepared material that could be presented as a digital image. Some presenters do not want the presentation recorded and distributed as it is their intellectual property, this is their right.

I am trying to put together virtual tech sessions within Eastern States, but in all honesty, the means to do this are available, but not yet cost effective for our situation. They are getting close and I may be sooner than many expect, and while the returns from the membership survey were encouraging they were not by any means an acclamation.

Looking forward to June.

Matt
