Jim and Judy Hupy along with Sharon and myself are looking for those who
would be able to host us in Chicago and the area between there and Detroit.
Something like helping to find the best campsite in the areas, places to
shop, eat, meet and greet. We see so many on the net and would love to
meet face to face. You are also welcome to join us in any or all of the
trip.

We start the Cascaders Rolling Rally from Wilsonville, Or May 22 to 25th
then start headed east on I90.
We plan on a stop at the Volo Auto Museum on Mon June 1st or 2nd, then head
to
South Bend to tour the studebaker Museum,
then to Elkhart to tour the RV Hall of Fame,
then to Auburn to tour the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum,
then Detroit to tour the Ford Museum and Greenfield, Chrylser museum, GM
museum; around June 6-7th
then to Hickory Corners to tour the Gilmore Auto Museum,
then to Chicago - take a River Cruise - Other things? rest a day, then
Start West on Route 66. around June 9 - 10th
We will have a schedule available very soon.

After arriving in Santa Monica for some of us our return home will be up
the coast Hwy 101 along the California and Oregon Coast. Love to see you
on this leg of the journey.

Dwayne,

We are currently underway to Montgomery and hove-to at the head of the Natchez Trace. (Tennessee)

While I can provide you a great deal of local knowledge, we are scheduled to be on the other side of Michigan that the 5th and 6th and home the evening of the 7th.

Let me warn you that last I heard the Walter P. Chrysler museum had closed. I suggest that you try direct contact on your own.

I do know that the GM Heritage Center is open by appointment only. I do not know what it take to get in.

Do not fret, you could easily burn two days with just the HFGV complex alone.

We need to talk about Chicago.

Right now, I am burning expensive bandwidth and limited house bank.

Do you have any good bet how many you will be in Detroit?

Hi Dwayne,

I can add my $.02 for Chicago as a 20 year resident of various
neighborhoods in near north and north side.

As you seemed to indicate, best bet for parking the GMC inside city limits
is driveway surfing with a homeowner. If you're looking to park within the
city limits otherwise, the only place I know of is the McCormick Place
Marshalling Yard.

http://rvparkreviews.com/view_campground_review_details.php?cgid=12504&region=Illinois&city=Chicago&park=Chicago-McCormick-Place-Marshalli ng-Yard
.

A few general suggestions for the Chicago specific experience not always
found in guides, in no particular order:

*The Green Mill.* Patricia Barber Quartet on Monday Nights. Employees may
comment on the speakeasy days somewhat if asked directly, including the
tunnels underneath and slider window door that is still installed, though
know its more of a legitimate jazz club rather than tourist attraction.

http://greenmilljazz.com/events/patricia-barber-quartet-2014-03-17/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Mill_Cocktail_Lounge

*Gene and Georgetti's.* Good enough for Sinatra, Bob Hope, and Lucille
Ball, then good enough for me. Outstanding food, though the genuine
historic ambiance may have influenced that opinion.

http://geneandgeorgetti.com/gene-georgetti-story/

*Lou Malnatis Pizza...The original Lincolnwood location* (a bit outside of
central Chicago). My personal fave for Chicago style deep dish. NOT the
duplicated experience with phony tchotchke decorations at the franchised
locations. Not overly manicured. Has a feel of a local Supper Club, which
it was and still is.

http://www.loumalnatis.com/lous-lincolnwood

Since experiencing any city is so very preference specific, feel free to
call me at sevenseventhree.315.Ninetwo2zero and I'll try to point you
toward things you may prefer.

Dwayne,

I wouldn't get to hung up with parking within Chicago's city limits. There are several trams/trains available at a very descent rate that can take you from the outskirts into the city within 1 hour or so. We live a couple hours drive north of Chicago and every time we visit we park in the suburbs and take the trains in. It is so much less stress than driving downtown.

I'd also recommend to try to park the coach in the outskirts and take the Metra train into the city. Just too much traffic and hassles to drive a coach around the city.

If you check with the folks at the Volo Museum, they may have some suggestions on places to park the coach and catch a train into the city. I'm not aware of the opening dates for any RV parks as it's still fairly early in the season for them.

G'day,

When Helen and I visited Chicago several years ago Rick Boultinghouse arranged for us to park Double Trouble on the street in front
of his home. Believe it or not to do that required that they fill out paperwork for permission to locate a DUMPSTER on the street.
That permit was only good for three days. We've still got the paperwork in the file on Double Trouble in the USA. After that we
moved down to the garage driveway next to Ron Morrison's home. The owners had vacated the property and it was up for sale.

Dwayne,

Yeah, Double Trouble Dumpster! ;-)

I don't think we'll make it that far north. Helen doesn't want to be away from Sydney more than two months. Plus we're probably
going to attend the Santa Fe Opera the end of July (bet your surprised that I ENJOY the opera)!

Sorry to miss you this year. Possibly next year when we do the Rolling

Dwayne -

I will be around during the time you are in the southeast Michigan area (my office is about 5 minutes from The Henry Ford), so you can throw my hat in the ring along with Matt and Mike's. Regarding the GM Heritage Center, Dick Balsley is the retired curator and a fellow GMCer. His contact information should be available in the GMCMI directory. If anyone can get you in there it would be Dick.

Also an FYI: the Great Lakers are holding a rally in South Bend June 8-10. Might be fun to drop in.

Nick;
Great info. We'll look at our schedule and do what we can to get to the
Great Lakers Rally even for a night or 2.
Now to contact Dick.
Will stay in touch with you. We will need a campsite as close to the Ford
Museum as possible. There could be 8 of us or more.

About 30 minutes west of the museum. Great Lakers rallied there in 2005. Ok place. Lots of trees.

Looks like Dick Balsley is president again this year. His email is listed in the most recent online newsletter:

www.gmcgreatlakers.org/Newsletters/2013-11.pdf

Get in touch with him and kill two birds with one stone. Not sure if they'll require you to join the club to attend the rally, but if you'll only be there for a couple of nights you may just want to contact the park directly to make reservations. I think the reason they're doing Sunday thru Wednesday is due to the popularity of the campground. BTW, Steve Thornburg is the rally host.

No we would not require you join, but we might try to get you to sign up. The Indiana State parks are used pretty heavily in the summer. We have had to prepay for 33 sites for those dates to insure the rally sites. If anyone would like to visit and stay they would need to go to the Indiana State Parks Website and try for reservations for those dates. Rally info will posted on the club website the second week of april and in the first Club newsletter in the same time frame.

*Gene and Georgetti's.* Good enough for Sinatra, Bob Hope, and Lucille
Ball, then good enough for me. Outstanding food, though the genuine
historic ambiance may have influenced that opinion.

Since experiencing any city is so very preference specific, feel free to
call me at sevenseventhree.315.Ninetwo2zero and I'll try to point you
toward things you may prefer.
