G'day,
Dave Pottebaum has noted he has purchased these wheels for his GMC with the 1 ton front end and they fit OK.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/16-inch-steel-wheel/p53581-16-inch-steel-wheel.html
He checked and verified that they DO NOT fit the OEM front end, the wheels hit the calipers.
I noted that you can obtain spacers from Jim Hupy:
http://bdub.net/jhupy/
They WILL fit the OEM rear drums.
These wheels are from Allied Wheel Components:
http://www.alliedwheel.com/wheel.php?name=Light+Truck+Duals+and+Singles
Their Website has a dealer locator.
Southwest Wheel lists a 16" wheel also:
http://www.southwestwheel.com/store/p-1835-29587.aspx
I asked if anyone has purchased these wheels and verified if they fit the OEM front end. As of today no one has responded.
PLEASE DO NOT BRING UP USED WHEELS!!!
PLEASE DO NOT ADVISE THAT WE CAN BUY ALUMINUM WHEELS FROM APPLIED GMC; WE KNOW THAT!
MY INTENT IS TO TRY AND FIND A SOURCE FOR NEW STEEL WHEELS THAT OWNERS IN AUSTRALIA CAN ORDER THEM FROM!!!
TELLING US THAT YOU WENT TO A PICK A PART AND GOT WHEELS OFF A CHEVY TRUCK IS USELESS TO US HERE IN AUSTRALIA!!!
THANK YOU
IT IS ABSOULTELY POSITIVELY IMPOSSIBLE TO BUY 16 1/2 TIRES IN AUSTRALIA. IF YOU NEED THEM YOU HAVE TO IMPORT THEM YOURSELF.

Rob,
I was hoping your friend on here, sorry I forgot his name right now, would still go to SW and test fit the other rim number that I found on their site.
That number and link, I gave in antoher thread, does not seem to be on your list in the first post above.
BTW - The size seems to match the $131 one however, it was only $56 per rim. (I for one want to check it out)
IF all goes well - I hope to be in CA in July.
I am willing to order one and test it on the 73 coach.
I strongly beleive it still has the OEM front calipers.
And if I'm blessed to buy the GMC in AZ to keep and use; I will need 16" steel rims for that coach too.
So either way I will need to find a supply and I will let you know the out come.
Thanks for all you do!
Sincerely, Tony

Don may not realize this but he bought Arch's GMC and it has 80mm calipers on it. Bob did some minor grinding and made them fit. In theory OEM 70mm calipers should clear the 16" steel wheels but I cannot be 100% sure of that either. I have come to the conclusion that the only way one can assure that any steel wheel purchased will fit is to try it on your coach. Unfortunately that is not possible. I'm sorry but as they say; "that's that!"

Rob--to add to the confusion, my storage neighbour went down this road and first bought a wheel locally that fit the description of a wheel that according to the net, would fit. It didn't and he has stock front calipers. He then purchased one from Jim K and it didn't fit either. Jim of course refunded him but in the end, we never did figure out what fits and doesn't.

Rob,
I have a few used Firestone Accu- ride 27994 16" wheels and I have 2 stock front ends with what I believe are the 70mm calipers. It will be a few more weeks (due to spring thaw) before I can get to the front ends to verify the calipers. If they are indeed the 70mm units, I'll try a wheel to see how much clearance there is. I also have a set of autozone 80mm calipers and some new pads.
If these wheels fit, what specific data do you need?

Tony,
Thanks for the compliment.
Don Adams is the individual that intends to visit Southwest wheel and see if the 29587PKGRY21 wheels they have will fit. HOWEVER, as
I mentioned his coach has 80mm calipers and as best I can tell the calipers he installed are the same as the ones Tom Whitton
installed. When Tom Whitton tried a bell shaped 16" wheel on his coach the caliper body hit the wheel. As I said Bob Dunahugh got
16" steel wheels to fit by doing some minor grinding on the calipers.
Please don't get me wrong but you need to be VERY careful what you publish about 16" wheels fitting. I have come to the conclusion
that there are too many variables for me to do that for anyone in Australia to use to order new wheels from a company in the USA.
Let's say I publish and email to the GMCnet stating that a steel wheel part number 29587PKGRY21 from Southwest Wheel will fit a GMC.
A guy from Australia buys 7 of them for $831 plus $117 ($948) for shipping to Long Beach where I know a guy that will put them in a
container. As a guess he'll charge around $300 to ship them to Sydney. That makes $1248 USD. Currently $1248 converts to $1346 AUD.
When they arrive they will incur 10% Customs Duty ($134) making $1480. Then there is 10% GST ($148) on top of that making the total
cost $1628 AUD. When he gets them home and they don't fit you reckon he'll be a happy camper or what! He's got 7 wheels that are
useless here in Australia that he spent $1628 on!
If they fit I'm his Mate, if for any reason they don't I'm the WANKER that told him they would!

Les,
I well and truly appreciate your wanting to help but really this has too high a chance of turning into a can of worms so as I said
I'm throwing in the towel.
If someone in the USA wants to pick it up and continue the fight go for it, the repercussions of the wheels not fitting if sent
within the USA are by far smaller. The buyer would be up for the cost to return them to the seller.
There are two tried and true solutions to converting to 16" wheels on a GMC;
1) Buy a set of Alcoa wheels
2) Buy a set of Eagle wheels
One could also:
3) Buy a set of 2 inch spacers

Rob, only two wheels would be useless as the other five would fit on the
rear, unless of course the drums were changed over to disk brakes.

Without taking the front wheel off, is there any easy way to determine 70 vs 80 calipers? I have 16" steel installed that fit. Plus, I have also bought one that will not fit ( bummer).

Yes.
The 80mm calipers use banjo fittings: http://www.appliedgmc.com/products/full/1010.jpg
The OEM calipers use screw in fitting: http://www.appliedgmc.com/products/full/609.jpg
The fact that you have 16" steel wheels that fit and one that doesn't is EXACTLY why I'm NOT going to pursue this any further.

I have stayed out of this thread hoping maybe you guys could take it further thatn I did some time ago. You have reinforced all I found out before. Here is what I know:
In 1989, GM changed the hub bore from 116mm to one just a little larger. They also changed the spider (spokes of the wheel) from a "bell" shape to a "conical". The new rims would not work for both reasons, the hub center on our hubs is 116mm so the rim would need to be a lug center rim which would be an aluminum after market rim. Most all aftermarket rims are lug center. The 1602-31 Alcoa rim they used to make was unique in that it was a pre89, hub center 16" rim that had a cut out wide enough to clear the 16.5" brake hardware.. You will not find a "new" steel rim with a bell shaped spider. Wish you could and if you do please share the rim number but there isn't one to my knowledge.
If you purchase an American Eagle rim "off shelf" it will be a larger hub bore and lug center, the Eagles Jim K. has have a 166mm bore which actually makes those rims hub AND lug center. A very good thing. You can use lug centric aftermarket rims but again, they are not quite right.
We live in America, make your decision-- do it right or make it "almost perfect".

Rob,
Regarding the 27994 wheel That Tom Phipps is using as a spare. Does it fit the front of his coach?
I would like to dig a bit further into this mystery. I'm curious about what 16" steel wheels some owners have used. There are numerous photos of 16" steel wheels sucessfully installed on these coaches.
As I mentioned, I have some Firestone Accu-Ride 27994 wheels here. IIRC, I did a quick trial fit on my coach when I first aquired them several years ago. I believe they fit the front with sufficient clearance. I intend to re-verify that in the coming weeks.
The 27994 was a factory installed wheel on many of the early GM dually trucks (75-99?)It is a wheel that is discontinued and several manufacturers reference it as being replaced by a more recent number. As several have found, those replacement numbers do not fit.
Maybe we need to start a new discussion titled "What 16" steel wheel are you using?"

Accuride 16" Steel Wheel #28623 is a replacement listing for GMC products. Correct hub centered bore, 8 lug, 16x6 but will not fit on our GMC front wheels. It will work fine for the rear wheels. I unfortunately have one that has never been on the ground or had a tire on it.

I think another issue in the middle of this concerns the amount of front linings left and the extension of the caliper. The caliper moves outward as the linings wear and can account for upto 3/8 " of reduced clearance.

Not that this has anything to do with the current discussion, but my coach came to me with a set of Firestone 27994 16" steel wheels on it. When I was running those wheels, I had the stock front calipers and there were no clearance issues. I can't speak to the fitment problem on coaches equipped with 80mm calipers.

The only thing I can figure is that the profile of the inside of the rims available now is different from the old Firestones.
My Dodge wheels don't have a problem clearing the 80 mm calipers I now have on the front.
