time for more tire opinions [message #243244]

Ok, i have been reading posts. and tire prices, and tire availability change all the time... so I will again venture and ask the question about tires....

I am in search of 4 tires for my rear. I have 16" steel rims that they will be going on. I run the dodge rims in front.. and I am not replacing those for 2 more years. So these 4 at this point will never be on the front, unless I go to the 1 ton... but I think and hope i have 20k-30k miles before I have to consider that.

Price is probably most important. but look is always right behind.

I am not traveling cross country in my GMC. I use it often in the summer, but pretty much all short trips. I change my oil once a year, and I know I do not go over miles on that.

looking at nexens that i would have to order into a walmart. they seem to be scarce around here.

hankooks have been looked at. and Kuhmo's.

We have a tire program through work, that I might work a deal on too. but still need to come up with a good tire to buy with that discount.

I do have the ability to mount and balance myself... but I would prefer to have someone else mess with that.

Balancing beads worked good on my new Firestone Transforce tires. I think the price was abou $20 higher than the lowest price I could find on line for some of the discount tire brands. I thought they were made in USA but turned out to be from Canada. Supported a forum service vendor.

I went with Nexens from Wally World on the basis that if you weren't going with Michelens, there probably wasn't that much difference at the end of the day. There is a WalMart on every third corner.

Happy with them but they don't use lead weights...only steel and Ken noticed that one of my fronts had 5 ounces in about the same place inside and outside the rim. I'll probably take that one back.

There are 5 Walmarts in Huntsville and all of them had the nexens last year. Make sure you get the light truck version. They sell the same tire size for passenger cars that are not load range E.

Funny you should mention this, I was really happy when I noticed that The Blue Streaks PO had installed new Nexens!

However, when I drove it to Sydney from country NSW it was all over the road.

When I got to my shop I checked the tire pressure - 45 psi! What the hell!

I then looked at the DOT number and it started with "P" not "LT" so I wound up buying seven new tires.

I was able to sell the "P" tires and recoup some of the cost.

Since the price of BFG Commercial TA's went through the roof I have bought sets of Cooper and Mile Star tires from Discount Tire. Can't tell any difference from the BFG's except price.
Check Discount's website for pricing.
They have almost as many locations as Wally World.

I've used Counteract in all my GMC tires for about 10 years. When I first
installed it, I inadvertently left a couple of lead weights in place. When
I noticed and removed them months later, I noticed no change in the smooth
ride I'd been enjoying. Here's a retailer lookup site:

Based on others recommendations, I've suggested to some owners that they
try plastic BB's. Most reports have been positive, but one user reported
that they were not effective in his front tires -- I suspect they required
more balancing than the amount of BB's used.

Counteract specifies 4 oz. for 225R16 tires, so that's what I've
recommended for the BB's also.

Jon,

AFAIK there are three sources:

Equal = plastic polymer "beads"
Counteract = glass beads
Wal-Mart = plastic BB's

I have used Equal and Counteract and I like Counteract better because it is glass beads.

I bought 10 oz bags of Counteract and used a small digital scale to divide it in two.

I bought these air rifle pellets from WalMart and put 4 ounces (IIRC) in each tire when I was mounting them.

I have Equal in my GMC tires and Airsoft beads in my 4 wheel trailer tires. Both work equally well.

My decision to use Eequal over Counteract was I got it for free. 4oz. in each tire.

I may be the "other owner" Ken is talking about. I had one tire that about jarred my teeth out until I finally gave up and had our local tire guy balance it with weights. Could have been a bad tire or something.

I think I bought the black beads at Walmart but that shouldn't matter. 4 oz is 4 oz.

Walmart's move from lead weights is, apparently, based on an edict from the EPA. Several cases involving morons and "lead chewing" have resulted in the shut down of (according to reliable sources) the last lead plant in the US. Smile

I once sold a house in Atlanta to a woman who, at the closing, asked me to produce a letter regarding lead paint in the house. I told her that if her 12 and 14 year old girls were stupid enough to gnaw on the woodwork, perhaps she should look at a newer model house or a double wide. My letter to her guaranteed that the house had lead paint on all the trim.

She bought it anyway.

If it was more than 4 ounces out of balance, 4 ounces of beads couldn't balance it.

If it was out of round, you couldn't pack enough beads into it to make it run true.

FYI, more beads can be added, but "normally" 4 ounces would be enough.

I would have added a couple ounces and tried again. And then one more time (total of 8 ounces). If I saw improvement, I would keep adding beads at the rate of two ounces per iteration (up to about 12 ounces) to try to get it balanced. If no improvement with 8 ounces, or 12 ounces didn't finish the job, I would have then taken it to a tire place.

I have Kumho tires on my F-350. The reviews that I read said that they were the best riding tire that that reviewer had ever had on his f-350, Well I had firestone tranforce tires on both of my trucks and they wore like iron but were "hard" tires. Bought the Kumhos and was very pleased with the ride, "softer" and they hold the road better than the transforces ever did. Will have to see if they wear like them but so far I like 'em.
I have Transforce tires on the GMC that I just put on a week ago and that's because I still have the original 16.5 wheels on it.

I've been running Bridgestones and had JimB true them. Use minimal wheel weights. As a matter of fact, some wheels have no
weights at all. Trueing gives you an unbelievably smooth ride.

G'day,

I suggest you call the order in and tell the sales rep that you don't want any tires that are more than six months old. I did that
when I ordered a spare for Double Trouble and I got a call back advising that all the ones they had were older than that. I then
called another internet seller and said the same thing. He told me he would check and get back to me. About an hour later he called
back and said he could ship me a KL-78 that was less than three months old.

Unfortunately I can't remember whether it was The Tire Rack of Discount Tire that met my request.

When I ordered mine from Tire Rack I told them I wanted the newest stock possible. The guy said there was a new shipment scheduled to arrive in 3 days and to wait for 4 days. 5 days later I picked up 6 new tires from the warehouse in South Bend that were 6 weeks old.

I used Dyna-Beads in the tires on the BMW K1200-gt 2 years ago (Michelin PR-II) and have had the bike to 145 (more than once) without a hint of vibration anywhere in the run. They don't work on race vehicles due to the violent g's generated in a race, but I do like them on the street.
