Getting ready to get Dobbelt Trøbbel back home [message #243231] |

So this weekend I will try to get Dobbelt Trøbbel home, it is a 360 miles ride one way and I want to be sure that I do not forget anything at my place.
It was last driven in 2011 and has been parked inside all the time after that.
This is what I know is wrong with it now.
The engine does not start, the seller tried to fire it up with a booster pack and start gas, no signs of life, but the booster only had power for 2-3 attemps, this was with completly dead batteries in the coach.
I will bring : New batteries, fuel pump, distributor, fuel hose
Rear right wheel is stuck, the seller said the parking brake has not been applied
I will bring : a new brake cylinder, brake tubing, fittings and tools, brake fluid
Right air bag is leaking, compressor workes fine.
I will bring : Air bag, shut off valves, compressor
In addition to the abowe I will take with me hand tools, a jack, oil and filter for the engine, trans fluid, fan belts, start cables, some wiring and connectors.
What else should I take with me ?

| Fuel filters. OR...
The best way to move it is with an outboard boat motor tank. That way it gets nothing but fresh fuel and you can get it home and THEN clean the tanks.

Carb filters and gaskets?
Once the fuel gets flowing, all kinds of stuff could let loose.

Espen,
It is my preferance - But I rather use either carb cleaner or gas in a plastic spray bottle over using starter fluid of any kind.
You might want to bring a gal or two of water and maybe even one or two gals of Antifreeze.
If you you end up finding out that your new coach has a small coolant leak on the way home - sometimes you can nurse a vehicle home with the extra water. But more importantly - by leaivng the radiator cap open by one notch. That way it does not presurize and force a small leak to leak even more.
Don't ask me how I know. Just know my first wife was not too pleased when we broke down in the mountains of Colorado on our honeymoon evening. Thank God there was a nice running stream of fresh water.
Tony (Ontario Canada) Marie and I are blessed to have had a 2nd chance to buy our farm. Still hoping and more importantly praying to be able to build a garage. Our 1970 Ultravan #520 has an Olds Toronado 455 in back.

Espen,
This sparked a thought - after you get it running you could install a fuel filter with a metal housing in rubber line that connects
the steel line that is attached to the front crossmember to the pump inlet.
Bring a few of them as they probably will get clogged up from crap in the fuel tanks and it would be a hell of lot easier to replace
than the one in the carb.

Everyone has focused on carb/ fuel problems for the no-start condition. Any idea if you are getting spark? Can you have the seller check? If not I'd bring a coil, points, condenser, cap, rotor and wires (you did say its a '73 right?)

Espen Hope you will not have double trouble on the way home
I am sure you will get her started, you have a distributor that works and you can always rigg up a temp fueltank on the passenger seat. If you have a carb on your other gmc that you works, you might even bring that?
Often things that let you down are small things, easy to fix if you have the bits and peaces. Maybe a new airfilter, so you are sure thats alright
After I came home from Berlin I found that all sparkplugleads were gone- as you want to replace them anyway just as well do it before you setoff.
I had lightbulbs break and with the short days in Norway, bring spare
Bring assorted wires to bypass anything that does not work or breaks down on the way.

I think you are bringing way too much stuff unless you absolutely can not purchase needed parts locally.
Let me reenforce Rob's suggestion of adding a filter in the rubber line just prior to the fuel pump. It is easy to add and easy to change on the road. My daughter and I once moved a coach 2400+ miles. We went through 5 of those added filters and also 4 in-carb filters on the trip. Each filter lasted longer than the one before it. The first set lasted less than 400 miles. The last one went over 700 miles and was still working when I delivered the coach.
I would suggest installing both filters before starting on the trip and carrying one spare of each with you.
Jim K. can give you the part numbers of both of these filters. I do not have them handy right now.
If the coach was running OK when parked, then the chances of needing most of the stuff you are bringing is very slim.
A couple of years back we started an airplane that had been sitting for 8 years. We drained and replaced the fuel that appeared just fine and checked a few other things. We fired it up, flew it locally for 30 minutes, and delivered it to the new owner a couple of hundred miles away. If it had been a ground vehicle we would not have replaced the fuel.
I used the drained gasoline in my GMC mixed at a ratio of 10%.

Ken spareparts for a gmc can be pretty rare in Norway, depending on where he is, any part can be rare. even beer! though moonshine is easier in some parts of Norway

Fuel filters, yes I will grab a bounch
Battery connectors for top post batteries can be handy
Yes a mulitmeter
I have some carb gaskets, good point
Boat fuel cell, yes with a pump, great idea !
Water/anti freeze, for sure
Carb cleaner, yes will do, a couple of cans with brake cleaner to.
Maybe a leak stop for the radiator ? and yes cap will be loose if there is a little leak.
Moonshine, yes for sure, it can be a cold night or two and the Norwegian stuff is 96% will for sure keep you warm or make you forget that it is could.
Sparkplug wires, will come with the distributor, just to be on the safe side.
And being in Norway so is it better to take with you more than you need, sure we can buy part but it can take time to get the, not unusuall to wait a week for them, and that is not nice when you have a brakedown on top of a mountain
Anything else ?
