I am in the process of replacing my headliner. I have read to use the original cardboard as a pattern for holes etc, OK. During my search, I read where the cardboard can shrink. Do any of you know what width I should cut the FRP panels so that it will "pop" into place on the aluminum extrusion? Thanks, Darrel

My headliners were "cardboard" and I used them for patterns. The FRP panels fit fine - they could have been a little longer (maybe 1/2 inch) but they still "popped" in. I had to use screws to hold them up anyway so the half-inch did not hurt anything.

I would recommend just marking the FRP where the old cabinet mounting holes are so you can adjust a little if you need to before cutting them.

What was that tool called? Sometimes hard to measure curves by yourself.

The cardboard worked just fine. I did not use FRB but used ABS plastic with
a pebble finish. No smell!

Thanks all! I will measure and compare to the cardboard which seemed to be about 3/4 short on each side. Also, the front sheet needs to be about 50 3/4 front to back. I suppose I will need to splice in a piece to reach this dimension since the frp sheets are 48 inches, 2 3/4 short.

Take a look at your beams

Iff you make your front peace narrower to fit a beam forewards of the original, then your second peace ( from the front) can be wider to go that same beam and still be within standart sheat size and will not have to splice !

good luck

I don’t know if this will help - I have a ’76 Palm Beach, but here are some photos and measurements of my headliner. I added 1/4” to each side to make up for shrinkage.

Darrel,

The panels I made, to replace the garbage that some outfit put up, are 72-7/8" long. The width are from rib to rib, leaving the rib channel open, and a 3" wide gap strip. Any wire or water line is accessible by only removing the gap strip.

Use a wide piece of ply (24") to push the panels up on center, without it the panels can/will crack because of the cutouts.
