I have been thinking about buying a shop press. One of the projects I would like to complete is replace bushings in the GMC front end control arms.

Are either the HF 12 or 20 ton models up to this task, and other occasional use (mostly snow blower and garden tractor maintenance)?

Also, can someone please explain the pros/cons of the A-frame vs the rectangular frame?

Thanks,

You are looking at the ones at Harbour freight http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=shop+press and I can tell you that I do not like any of them.

First allways go for the larger one, the 20 ton, you will need it one day for sure.

Then you have the design of the press, the A frame have the piston centerd in the middle, that is not good, you should be able to move the piston sideways.

And the same with their rectangular frame, since they are using a bottle jack with springs the side to side movement will be very limited at best.

This is the one you should be looking for

It is the first one I did find so look at it as an example, but here you have the side to side movment and a large gauge so you gan see the pressure, that is helpful when you are pressing as you will see when items are seated.

Hope this helps Smile

Paul,
I have one of the 20 ton rectangular harbor freight presses. I'll say it's OK, especially if you don't use it very often. I probably don't use it much more than once a year. It's kind of clunky, and I have had issues with it not doing a great job of keeping the motion of the press arbor perpendicular to the bed. If you are pushing a hard bearing into a soft aluminum housing, it can get it cocked if you are not watching carefully.

The one Loffen linked to looks much nicer, but it's also more money, so some of it depends on what your budget is.
