This may seem a little trivial but I must ask.
It seems that I have seen many pictures of spare tires where the wheel is mounted with the convex side out and the concave side of the wheel in towards the coach rear window. Similar to how they mount on the coach. Polished side out. Jim K / Applied GMC also shows a spare tire cover that says "Show off your Alcoa Wheels". I assume that means polished side out.
I had never had the vinyl stretch cover off my spare and when I took it off the wheel is mounted concave side out and the tire carrier is not "offset" enough to mount the spare polished/convex side out.
What was standard?
Are there different types of spare tire mounts?
Maybe standard GMC vs. my Coachman?
I don't want to mount my Alcoa spare concave side out for two reasons. First I don't want to scratch up the polished side of the wheel in mounting it, and second, I think it would look a lot nicer with the polished side out.
How are yours set up?
Maybe I can make a spacer to increase the offset or make other modifications?

If your tire is mounted with the concave side out the carrier must have been sectioned by the previous owner at some point. All GMC's are mounted the other way. The reason it was modified was so a flat tire cover could be installed over the tire like a continental kit .

Steve,
My OEM spare was mounted shiny side out. Some years ago, probably 15,
someone posted that they modified the mount so they could store spare
hoses, etc, inside the concave side, covered with a fiberglass cover. As
that fad spread, someone added an easily opened door to the cover. Someone
else added a pull-out hose reel.
I joined in, modifying the mount too much so that it sometimes vibrates
against the body. And I've never stowed anything in there because it's too
hard to open/close. :-(
Apparently your PO joined in too...
The easiest fix would be to trade with someone who likes the change, or get
a scrapped mount.

Thanks for your response on my spare tire question. It didn't make any sense to me but now I understand that with a premium on storage space, every possible location might be used, including the concave side of the spare tire rim.
Thanks to Gene who is always good at providing links and pictures and that is always helpful. It motivated me to finally figure out how to search the photo site. I was able to find a good picture of a stock spare tire carrier and compare it to mine. I tried to post a link here but could not figure it out.
Anyway, it looks like I am in the market for a stock spare tire carrier. Let me know if you have one to sell or where I might find one.
I will post in the swap meet and check with Jim, Jim, or Ken Frey. Other ideas are welcome.

Steve when I first noticed a GMC shop modifying the spare holder in 1987 on a GMC motor home the reason he gave me for doing it was only for cosmetic reasons. The extra storage area would be a good thing too. If the mount was done properly I would like it better with the rim facing the opposite way if a stainless steel ring were covering the tire tread and a flat fiberglass or metal cover were covering the tire rather then a Vinyl cover that bulged where the rim protruded. Most vehicles have the spare mounted so it has the clean continental look rather then the rim protruding. I have my spare mounted stock with a stainless ring and a stainless wheel cover but I would rather the flat cover look but it isn't worth it to me to go to the trouble of modifying the mount.

I wish I was in Florida with you and Alex Syrum. This North East winter has been ugly this year.
I would love to have an old Cadillac Eldorodo. I have a front drive Caddy but it is a 99 Deville. Nice comfortable car, and the Northstar 32 valve engine really makes it a pleasure to drive. I often wondered if the Northstar engine could be mated to the TH425 transmission. Mine is rated at 330 Horsepower in the Concourse edition.

I too had thought toward that idea. It would take designing a front clip complete to hold the entire drive train from the Caddy and allow it to bolt back in. Then I heard the starter is burried under the intake manifold. With torque not as robust as our 455 and 403's when we found a 350 Olds motor would bolt in I went that way. Would work at some level, I don;t have the play money to try it. Want one?
