What do you think the value is on a used 3.55 differential ?
I am talking to a seller about buying it but there has been some problems with the price in the add that is not correct and so on, but I still want to give him a fair offer.

Espen,
Is that the one I spoke with the owner to see if he be willing to sell just the differential?
Tony (Ontario Canada) Marie and I are blessed to have had a 2nd chance to buy our farm. Still hoping and more importantly praying to be able to build a garage. Our 1970 Ultravan #520 has an Olds Toronado 455 in back.

It is in the US, the seller is willing to have it checked, but I really need what to offer him for it, applied sells them for $ 15-1600 but with a great warranty
WD0AFQ wrote on Thu, 27 February 2014 18:39 | Is it in your country or over here? One might want to know the mileage on it. The seals and bearings need checked close. I had a seal start leaking on my 355 and had to replace it, on drivers side. Don't think that would be a big deal just replace them I guess before installing. I had Applied replace mine on their rack.
Bottom line, I have never heard of a used one offered for sale. Have not looked at new prices since I got mine in summer of 07. I should have just kept quiet I guess, but did not want you to feel lonely. Would half the new price be in order?
Just depends I guess. Make sure you can trust the person the best you can. Why is he selling it? All kinds of questions. You know how to do it.
So, let's see what folks say, what is it worth?

Generally, around 50% of the retail price is a good starting point to consider for a "used" value for a part that is still available on the retail market. That would put a used 3.55 around $775. Could go up or down from that depending on age, condition, shipping cost, tax if from a dealer, etc.
Once a part is out of production the price can go up depending on availability and demand in the used market. Beyond those general thoughts anything goes between a buyer & seller. Sometimes the "Deal" is more important than the price. JWIT

Bo,
You've asked that a couple of times. Have you talked to JimK? If you have
the tools and skills, he'll probably sell them to you. Certainly the
warranty should not be as generous as for an assembled unit, but the cost
savings should reflect that.

Ken,
When I was building hot rod Harleys in Hong Kong and people brought me parts the obtained elsewhere I would make them work with me
installing them, I'd follow the Harley manual TO THE LETTER or I'd work to their instructions. When we were done I'd have them sign
a statement noting that I had followed the correct procedures or their instructions and therefore was NOT responsible for any
problems or failures of the parts I had installed or failures related to the parts I had installed.

Rob,
Each time you've mentioned your Hong Kong Harley business I have wondered: Who were your customers? Ex pat Americans, Aussies and Brits or Chinese?

Gene,
I need to provide a bit of background information that relates to your question.
Hong Kong is a duty free port so anything and everything that comes in is duty free.
Hong Kong has an area of 426 square miles (Houston has an area of 600 square miles)
Population of Hong Kong today is approximately 7,200,000 (3,400,000 men / 3,800.000 women)
The paragraph below is from: http://www.gov.hk/en/about/abouthk/factsheets/docs/highways.pdf
Hong Kong's roads are among the most heavily used in the world, with over 665 000 vehicles on 2090 (km) (1300 miles) of roads - 442
(274 mi) on Hong Kong Island, 462 (287 mi) in Kowloon and 1186 (737 mi) in the New Territories. Together with the dense development
and difficult terrain, it imposes a constant challenge to the highway engineers.
To keep Hong Kong from being swamped with vehicles the government had (in 1992) a first registration tax of 90% of the landed cost
of a vehicle. Landed cost = Wholesale or retail cost of the vehicle plus all transportation charges. That basically meant that a
Harley Davidson wholesale price was 100% higher than in the USA.
They were not a form of basic transportation; they were a toy.
They were owned by a cross section of all of those mentioned below and you can add Germans, Swiss, Canadians, etc. who could afford
a very expensive toy!
I got into it for two reasons:
1) I imported a 1988 Heritage Softail and modified it taking the horsepower on the ground at the rear wheel from 58 to 85 with a
stock displacement of 88 cubic inches. It blew everybody else's Harley away.
2) The local mechanics were SO bad people BEGGED me to work on their bikes.
I charged $50 per hour labor and arranged dealership status with a Harley shop in Santa Maria, CA who would sell me OEM parts at a
discount and with aftermarket companies. I charged my customers the same price they would pay in the USA plus the actual cost of
shipment. NO ADDITIONAL markups. The Chinese shops marked them up even more! The downside was that I would work in my garage at home
almost every night until midnight and most weekends!
Regards,
Rob M.
