Yesterday I decided to top off the Royale with gas so gave it about 10 gals to top her off. After dumping in the second 5 gallons I thought I smelled gas-sure enough a drip on the floor. Must be a hose, right? No such luck, it was coming from the bottom of the tank itself. Looks to be about a 5/8" long crack below and outside the drain plug.
What to do, drain the now full tanks? I thought of an old trick I'd heard of but never tried. Out came a bar of soap from the shower and I rubbed it into the crack. A miracle, it works so I then proceed to wire brush the area and apply JB weld.
Can't believe it but it seems to have worked. Who would have believed it, so far so good. Hope it will last until I build a new tank.
Just havin' fun,
Hal

35 years ago I remember a small tube of glue, something? Seal?
Put a little bit on toilet paper or light rag and press it against hole. No comebacks.. Kinda smelt like model glue.

Also remember my boss when I apprenticed showing me how to stop a pinhole leak in an installed gas tank with fuel. Clean the leak area with sandpaper, try to get some flux to stick around leak. Heat up your 5 lb solder iron with the torch. Lay a penny on the iron, flux and solder it and then hold the penny to the leak area till it cooled enough to hold. Worked

We used Fels Naptha and it would work long enough for the epoxy to set and the rust out later at some inconvenient time. But, I also has a car that had an exhaust system that was almost entirely beer cans and muffler putty. They don't sell that any more because it was sodium silicate filled with asbestos.

For small holes in gas tanks - or Jaguar oil pans in the Day - an appropriately sized sheet metal screw with a rubber washer on it.  An uncle had a gravle mile long drive and an XK-150s.  The bottom of it looked like a mushroom farm.

I read that Ivory soap had been used but we didn't have any at home so I just used the soap I normally use. Olive Oil Soap by Eeolia is the brand.
I would guess 'Ivory' was used as a generic name and most any brand might work. Or maybe I was just lucky.

Chewing gum has worked for me as an emergency temporary fix.

Not sure what brand would be best.

O'Reilly's had some epoxy that fixed a running leak on my 77. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it.
