I've been hearing about the Dixielander Bean Station rally for about as long as I've had a GMC (16 years now). Have never been to it, but maybe this is the year I should try and make it.
Does one have to be a Dixielander to attend? What costs are involved? I am assuming it is a work rally. What kind of work can be done by attendees. I have a Rear Brake Drum Control Arm Kit to install. Is that something that I could do there?
Is there a site where I can find out more? I've already looked at the Dixielander website, but details are kind of sketchy.

The Famous Dixielander Bean Station Rally notice will in the hands of all dues paid Dixielander Members by 1 March. Costs and events will be in the newsletter.
Yes, it is a work rally. Almost anything has been accomplished there. Great Host, Great Food, Great Fun.
Membership is a generally accepted requirement, due to semi-limited space. P.M. Me for membership information.

I propose to do a rear drum arm system, and time permitting a couple of other things. Looks as if we will do one on Stick's coach, a disc system. I have been assured there will be gurus present who have accomplished this before who will hopefully take a break from their labors and wander by and keep us on the right track. Given the photos and instructions with the kit I got, it will be hard to screw it up... but I am proficient in screwing things up, so I'm gonna ask for a lookover at each important step. If we do three of them however, "Third time's the charm!".
This will be my first shot at Bean Station, because it's the first time since I've owed the coach that my national Breed Specialty show doesn't conflict.

I have been there many times. It is a great place to work on a GMC. Plan ahead and bring the required parts for the project(s) with you. If you forget or break something, there are 3 auto parts stores 15 minutes away in Morristown. Then there is also the NAPA warehouse that is open 7 days a week for the really strange things not normally stocked in Morristown. We got a GMC GMC fuel pump there after someone broke down leaving there on a Sunday. Also one year picked up 4 rebuilt front axles/ CV joints. There is a reasonably stocked hardware store about 3 blocks away (closed on Saturdays).
I have seen 2 transmissions replaced, a final drive, multiple front hubs, and bearings, brake upgrades and last year Matt did his reaction arm. Lots of smaller stuff also gets done. The pit is a nice work area if you can get Chuck Boyd out of it. He is always dong something strange on the pit to someone's coach.
Nothing says you can not arrive a day or even days early to get a head start on a major project.
So join the Dixielanders, sign up for the rally, bring your projects, and show up early if possible. Plan ahead of time if you need additional manpower and line up those people. Others may lend a hand but you really need to have his arranged before you arrive.
It is a great time. Even Jim K. showed up last year.

Adding to Ken B's comments: We try to restrict the pit to relatively quick
projects since there's so much demand for it. That leaves only one paved
work area for longer term projects like 1-Ton and Reaction Arm
installations. We all know what it's like trying to work on dirt/gravel,
which is what Matt and Tom Pryor had to do last year. A sheet of plywood
would be a great improvement. We should probably try to get one this year.
Attendance will be restricted to 60 DIXIELANDER coaches this year; 40
electric and water, 20 electric. NO A/C ALLOWED due to limited 120 vac
availability.

My brake parts (shoes and hardware) arrived Friday. Reaction arm kit came a month ago and change. I got jacks, hand tools, drill motor, and cribbing. I shouldn't need to get over a pit at all. If there;s flat ground, I'm Fat City. I'll chuck a tarp and some corrogated cardboard under to catch spilled fluid, drill chips, and the like.

Listen to what ever Ken H. says. He knows what the procedures are. I'm basically a dues paying outsider. Meaning I paid my dues but this is the only thing I ever go to because the DixieLanders are so far away from me. It is 500 miles just to Bean Station.
They let me hang around even though I haven't learned how to speak southern. They really are a great bunch.
Chuck has not asked yet, but I'll try to remember to bring my scales and AC stuff again. If you are recharging with Duracool, be sure to bring it. Duracool is not available in town. You can get R-134 at Walmart in Morristown, but I highly recommend Duracool. Also AC recharge does not need pit time. We can do that right where you are parked.

OK I will attempt to join the Dixielanders today, and hopefully my application will not be rejected. At this point I will try to arrive a day early, by not planning on any GMC projects right before I leave, which usually causes me to be late for rallies.
I'll bring a grab bag of stuff to do such as steering column replacement, finish stainless steel parking brake, drum brake upgrade, body pads, steering column boot replacement, steering idler arm replacement or water leak fix. I hope to pick one or two of them that make sense for the time and facilities available.
Will there be someplace close by for holding tank dumping or should I plan on finding a place on the way? I'd do it at home, but I will have already been camping for 3 days in my son's driveway in Louisville before I get to Bean Station.
This will also be a good excuse to use my supplemental tank-less water heater since it looks like I might be dry camping.

Hi everyone;
As others have noted, I've heard of Bean Station for years and always thought it was a great concept for a rally.
This year, I'll be bringing my coach back north from Fla when Bean Station happens. Plan to run my bike through the Great Smoky Mtn's again on the way home. [it's in the trailer behind the coach at the moment]
I won't likely have any work that needs doing, but thought to stop by even if just for the day to see what this storied rally is all about. Guess I'll have to sign up to do this, eh? No problem.

If you're planning Tail Of The Dragon, bring your heavy leathers and a good skid lid. They wipe out two or three a week on that stretch. And >don't< plan on driving the coach down it, it will take six forevers and make the bikers behind you mad.

Hey, Johnnie!
Thanks for the thoughts.
I got to ride it on the way down in late October, but on my bike. It was an absolute blast to ride on a bike and given this winter, I'm just itching to ride it again. I had my new at the time Go Pro camera on the dash of the bike to capture it all. Next time, maybe I'll point the camera the other way to capture my big, stupid grin as I negotiate the 318 turns. I overheated my back brakes part way through by dragging them too long, but other than that it was a good, safe ride for me.
The day I went through, there was a guy in a class C SOB and even some 'under wraps,' VW's from their test facility [in NC, somewhere, I think].
A friend of Nelson Wrights took his GMC through there apparently a week or so before.
Last time, we parked in Maggie Valley, NC, at the Hillbilly Campground- a little 15 site place right on the main street of Maggie Valley-not much for amenities, but the washrooms were spotless and the owner quite an amenable fella with a daughter in the USAF [I have a daughter who was in the RCAF until quite recently].
The Wheels through Time museum is a must-see for any fans of two wheels passing anywhere nearby.
This time, we may come up the west side and camp somewhere near I-75 and ride in from that way.
I have seen a video of some lost soul with an 18-wheeler blindly following this GPS which took him right down 129 [the Tail]. Not pretty and lucky no one got hurt when the truck takes up more than both lanes in the tight and often blind turns.

I hope to pick one or two of them that make sense for the time and facilities available.

There is a place there where you can dump your tank.

Thanks Ken, You know we can`t do nothing without the scales. I have a vacuum pump, gauges and some durocool, and I also have Mr. Works alignment kit and steering column stuff I will bring if needed. You could come early and hang out here. I would like to talk to you about a repeater or booster to get my wifi to the barn.

Ken it is a Belkin. It is about 1 year old. It broadcasts 2 signals one designated as guest? Has different security for each.
Ken Burton wrote on Wed, 19 February 2014 10:05 | I might do that.
What brand of AP/ router do you have in the house?
