Those of you considering buying or changing tow service may be interested
in this $69.95 introductory offer:

https://email.koa.net/pub/sf/FormLink?_ri_=X0Gzc2X%3DWQpglLjHJlYQGzblGzaRqhyzba8DBzcwUEIt079hvqtzcPhRiNtnVXMtX%3DWQpglLjHJlYQGgLYb8UczewzcWXAGdXPskWli 9wnkTkRwlyHh&_ei_=EolaGGF4SNMvxFF7KucKuWP8jhw9Wdi2122_6UdYTMBiE5tvIMRzchN1qJL5PIGmpRd6WINuUr6gnU4Aaf4lK5ZXYc3G4slXm7KS4VSEfpOaEfO0mnO3Hq2GcWGrnCou TeNkHElrRoYfBu9wEYXFMNcyy-CMr7u1d9hGpGQsyOCskGvabNbTUEg3jiYY0OZA
.

Forget that and use this:

http://goo.gl/kwnI00

I don't know what's with that long URL, nor with KOA's involvement, but I
do know that I've been very satisfied with Allstate's RV Roadhelp service
for about 18 years, including several GMC tows. Don't forget that they
brought me 384 miles home from MS this summer, albeit reluctantly. I'd
sort of expected a termination notice after that, but instead got an
automatic renewal notice.

I know someone has a spreadsheet with this info, but how does Allstate's towing work? Is it to their "closest approved service provider" (Good Sam and CoachNet) or is it a defined mileage radius (AAA) or something else entirely? I see this on the website:

"Our Roadside Assistance is one of the best. As an auto club member, you will have 24/7 access to on-site emergency roadside service. Allstate will also honor your destination of choice, be it your dealership, home or favorite repair shop."

But that doesn't actually explain it.

Thanks,

Coachnet was the one FMCA was hooked with. Right after I paid my yearly 100 premium, back in November, I got this from FMCA, and 30.00 cheaper. Not sure what happened. Will stick with Coachnet for now. They have served me well.

I am a belt and suspenders guy, especially with my GMC. I currently have Coachnet and Good Sam. When the distributor gear in my new motor failed late at night a few years ago, I called Coachnet. They sent a wrecker to tow me to a nearby Walmart to get me safe and to spend the night. I called the Walmart manager when we arrived and was told they don't allow overnight parking. I mentioned that to the tow truck driver and he called Coachnet and told them I couldn't stay there. A few minutes later they called back with a 2nd Walmart (I confirmed with the store manager that it was OK) and on we went. The next day they called me at the coach and tried to take me to a nearby truck service place that said "they would look at it...". Not wanting to do that I told the dispatcher that the "closest approved service provider" was my driveway about 60 miles away. They agreed to that, but said they would not tow me from there if it turned out I couldn't fix the problem. OK by me.

Last Summer the transmission in my Ford Escape blew and I needed to be towed. I called Good Sam and was told OK they would come but would only tow me to the "closest approved service provider" which was AMMCO or something like that about 3 miles away. I said no way I want to go to a transmission shop about 6 miles away that I had dealt with before. They said that I would have to pay for the difference between the closest place and the one I wanted to go to. I informed the dispatcher if that was the case, I would tell all my friends to avoid Good Sam. A few minutes later another agent came on the line and said they would tow me where I wanted to go at no extra charge. I don't know how Good Sam would work with my GMC. That's why I also have Coachnet.

I think I would be very foolish to be driving on long cross country trips in a close to 40 year old motor vehicle without towing insurance.

My Coachnet comes as an add on with my GMC's auto insurance and I've been happy with them. I also have Good Sam as a back up towing insurance. I think I will go with this offer as the Good Sam is coming up for renewal for $100 and I am not completely satisfied with how they tried to treat me during my Ford Escape tow.

I just signed up for Allstate. Allstate's website does not like Firefox my preferred browser. I had to resort to Internet Explorer, which I don't like, to complete the transaction. I am now a member and can start getting tows today according to their website.

You can pay the premium in up to 12 month installments at no additional charge...

WOW! What a Deal!

As it turns out I never got a package of stuff from Good Sam. All I ever got was endless solicitations for stuff I have no interest in. Maybe that will stop once my membership in the towing thing expires.

I have a specific interest in the Escape tow--what year is it and what happened if you don't mind telling me.

My 2007 V6 AWD Ford Escape is not a towed. The transmission self-destructed as did my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer's transmission a few years earlier. In 50 years of driving and owning cars, I've never lost a transmission until these two recent Ford products. The guy at the transmission place claims that Ford makes unreliable transmissions due to cost savings in the internal parts (as in cheap) plus they are incredibly complicated and hard to remove and repair. I don't know about that, but I am sometimes more comfortable with my Manny Tranny TH425 than I am with the Fords. When I called around to other transmission places they all knew exactly what was wrong when I described the symptoms of both failures. Common failures apparently.

Thanks Richard--that coincides with a few claims we've received.

"...The nearest capable repair facility..." is written somewhere. Since
I'd also called several times over the years and verified that commitment,
when we broke down in Tupelo, MS, I repeated that phrase over, and over,
and...over until they agreed to take us 384 miles to "Henderson's Garage"
instead of 700 miles or so to the "GMC Coop".

Thanks Ken. That's what I was wondering about. Only AAA offers a defined radius of 100 miles per day. There are a few shops between Tupelo and the Coop I'd trust, but that's just me. I struggled with Good Sam getting them to go 10 extra miles, so Allstate certainly did a better job than they would have. CoachNet gave me no problems about going 30 miles past their "preferred" provider, but I'm not sure if they would have gone 380+ miles!

G'day,

I have a 2003 Mazda Tribute which is basically the same vehicle as the Ford Escape here in Sydney. Last year the transmission failed
at around 80,000 KM (50,000 miles). The transmission shop I took it to told me something very interesting it was designed for 4
cylinder vehicle!

Applications:
1994-2002 Mazda 626 4-cylinder
1994-1997 Mazda MX-6 4-cylinder
1994-1997 Ford Probe 4-cylinder
1995-2000 Ford Contour
1995-2000 Mercury Mystique
1995-2007 Ford Mondeo (up to Mondeo III 4-cylinder model)
1999-2002 Mercury Cougar
2001-2008 Ford Escape
2001-2006 Mazda Tribute
2005-2008 Mercury Mariner

As noted here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_CD4E_transmission

The V-6 in the Escape / Tribute / Mariner put out a HELL of a lot more power / torque than the 4 cylinder engine and it kills the
transmission.
