While re working some wiring last Sunday (Remember no K.I.S.S TRAY) I tried a couple cleaning products to see which would melt the old road grime away. I tried Simple Green and Purple Power. Both seemed to loosen the dirt but would not hose off. I could wipe the dirt away after spraying, but need a product that can be sprayed on and rinsed off.

Anyone have luck with any product?

You might try "Super Clean". Advance Auto has a BOGO sale. It is really wild stuff, I mopped the shop floor with it and the rubber gloves* I used to scrub with "shattered" a week later. Main ingredient is lye, which will dissolve aluminum and attack most paints.

I use SC to degrease engine parts and cut 16:1 to clean the shop floor.

I use Super Clean on the engine and chassis-there is nothing better in terms of cleaning power and a clean rinse. Makes the water so small that it gets under everything. Next best is Simple Green from the 55 gallon barrel. Purple Power doesn't even come close. Super Clean is biodegradable, and no bathtub ring or leftovers from the soap. Don't get it on finished paint unless you want to renew the finish! Will remove paint if left in wet constant contact, so rinse well. Mist a warm engine with water and then spray the SC where needed, wait about 2 minutes, and then rinse off with hose. I like to lay the hose out in the sun so I get a good shot of hot water for the rinse. You should be able to find it at Wally World.

Ernest is right, Advance's price beats Wally World right now, I just put 2 gallons in my cart!

Y'all think super clean is best? I have never had anything that simple green would not clean. I buy in a half gallon jug from SAMs club. Maybe I just have not run into any real bad grease. I admit I keep all of my engines pretty clean. Been using simple green exclusively since about 1990. I may try some super clean. Just don't like grime under my engine glass or on the running gear.
Thanks,
Dan

I've used Simple green on many things and always had good luck, But this 40 year old road grime is tough. If you spray it and get a rag to it, it will clean it. But way to many tight areas it just won't work.

Never tried Super Clean, I'll give it a try and see how it works.

I have used Awsome from the dollar store on a popup I bought, Forgot how it made the dirt fun off. but still had to brush some.

OrangeSol.

This stuff is the best degreaser I've seen since the EPA outlawed trichloroethane. When I did a clutch job on the BMW K1200 the entire bell housing and transmission face were cover in oil. Spray this stuff on and the oil just washed away like water.

Simple Green will ruin paint. It caused little 3-point stick stars on the 87 Taurus when I used it to clean road grime and tar and before I realized it 9it didn't show for 2-3 months) I had used it to clean some diesel overflow from the M-B 240D. I used it in a parts washer, didn't use gloves and it dried the skin on my hands to the point they felt like sandpaper. I'll never use it again.

For years of grime on my John Deere I used cheap dollar store oven cleaner. Simple green wouldn't make this 'hose off" but the oven cleaner did the trick.

sprayed it on cold, let it sit, rinsed well with a cold hose and took the thick layer of dirt and oil and grease with it .

Leave oven cleaner on a little to long and the paint goes too, aluminum and chrome discolouration as well. Be careful!

Agreed Rob. Oven cleaners can be very corrosive as they are designed to clean porcelain.

If some were concerned about using brake cleaning fluid they should be twice as concerned with using oven cleaner. It is primarily sodium hydroxide or caustic soda. If sprayed in the eyes it can very quickly cause blindness. If sprayed on bare skin it can cause chemical burns.

I would not recommend spraying it on your engine. It is so corrosive that if it seeps or gets washed into electrical connectors it will cause corrosion and subsequent failure of the conduction of the wires. Even very diluted with water it is corrosive.

Stick with products designed for cleaning engines.

I have noticed that the products hat use o wok so well 20 years ago does
not work very well as EPA has stepped in.
Sales reps all agree that the great products do not exist, just pacifiers.

Johnny,

Thanks! You got the grey matter between my ears to flash and I remembered that's the stuff I used to clean the motorcycle engine
that took all the skin off my hands because I didn't wear gloves!

It does work great but watch out around aluminum--at least if it's anodized.
