Hi gene,
That was a very helpful thread. Two things stood out re the Clasco. First was Ken B's comment about his airplane engine that seemed to run hot and had glazed cylinders when he tore it down. The Clasco seemed to run a bit hot as we came across country, but I chalked that up to a bad fan clutch that we replaced along the way. When JimB and Janie drove the Clasco to the Coos Bay three club rally heat seemed not to be an ongoing issue. The second thing that stood out to me from that thread was the talk about a possible crack in the bottom of the intake manifold or a leaking intake manifold gasket.
The cross overs have not been blocked in the Clasco.
I don't know if I want to try to replace the intake manifold and/or gasket with the engine in the coach or not. When I put the intake manifold on the S&J engine in the Royale it was on a engine stand so I could closely inspect the seal all the way around before that engine was installed in the coach. Not sure how one can do the same level of inspection with the engine already in the coach but the guys that do this all the time probably know how, it is just that I don't.
I will do the calibration check, plug check, PVC/valve cover check, oil leak check, and pull the carb when we get home to see if I can find anything obvious. If nothing shows up from those I will drink a glass of wine while saying, "hmmmmm".
Everything needs to be vetted in terms of the cost of inexpensive oil. If living with the oil consumption as it is means another couple of bucks each fueling, that is not much of a cost issue. Slowing down a couple of miles per hour would save more that that!

Jerry,
Check this thread on Oil Consumption from early March 2011.
I had the same symptoms with my Bob Lamey built 455 with about 60000 miles on it.
I asked the net for help and got many suggestions and a lot of good information but no definitive diagnosis or solution.
I wasn't willing to pull the intake manifold in the "hope" that I would find an internal leak. I just kept adding oil and driving it.
