Guys,

A few posts ago about the HVAC box, there was as reference to an article about "separating hot from cold". In the article it talks about adding a diverter to improve airflow. Looking at the placement of the diverter it would seem to block nearly all the airflow to the heater core?

Has anyone done this mod that could shed some light on the install of this diverter? Will it really block the airflow to the heater core? Any pictures would be welcomed!

I was a little confused about that one as it would be placed just about the same spot where the flap would go and mine -73 has a reinforcment going there.

You can see it in this picture

I too was always confused about that diverter and never installed it. The
big improvements were: First, eliminating all outside air and replacing it
with recirculated air. Second, resealing the heat/cool door.

Of course, the ultimate improvement was replacing the whole HVAC box to get
more direct air movement:

But I guess that's not a viable option for an originality enthusiast. :-)

Jon,
The added air diverter sits just below the swing arc of the temp door. What it does is starts directing the air flow towards the outlet opening and reduces the turbulence that is created when hitting a flat panel (temperature door).

Does it help? Without instruments is hard to tell, it can't hurt.

I added the piece to my unit, tape it on and test for temp door swing before nailing it.

I have a 73 without factory air in the dash.
Is this worth doing to mine to get more warm air?

I did find one mod, just under the air outlet towards the firewall you have a 2 x 2" space that there is no use for, when I mounted the new insulation I did cover that space and attached the insulation at the outlet.

I took a picture of, will upload tommorow..

I thought the diverter plate was to improve the air-con cold air.
The air has to turn 90 degrees at that location to go
around the heater core and out the dash.

I don't think it will improve heating.
Maybe Kelvin has an answer.....

Sorry, it wont help the heat side. I don't know 73 that well, but I would look into changing to a later dash heat/ac unit, or add ac.

It must be a sweat box without AC?

I drove it from NC to NorCal in the summer of 2011.
I lost 10 pounds, drank water constantly and never had to stop to use the rest room.
Sweat box may be an understatement.
