Hay all of you Caddy 500 owners...I bought a 500 for rebuild to go into my stretch. I'm curious as to the cost of your rebuild...I'm looking at $3200.

That's going to depend on what has to be done. The one that John Beaver(Americus GA)did for me was bored 20 over and honed but the crank was just polished and the heads were done. John wanted good head gaskets so he ordered some from Mondello. New timing chain and the other stuff you'd expect. I've got the parts to assemble and will do it when I get a chance. In the mean time, it's greased up and stored inside.

My 403 got a complete going through. The crank was fine and only polished. All the bores and pistons were fine except for one where a broken ring had scratched the bore. I chose to only bore that one cylinder 20 over, the rest are standard. Cam and lifters were fine and were re-used. John did the heads, all the machine work, bought the parts (new rings, oil pump, gaskets, new stainless valves, valve springs, surfaced everything, etc), and completely reassembled the 403.

John's been building engines forever and has a one man shop. He has a helper that disassembles things but John does all the machine work and assembly in his clean room. Btw, he owns a GMC also that is going to be very nice when he gets it done.

Total cost for all this (both engines)was $1800. The 403 runs like a top. Strong, no noises, no smoke. Dick Patterson rode with me and said "That's a strong 403!" John even called during the trip to Branson just to check in. Don't get that kind of support from the big guys.

I have spent quite a bit of time talking with the fellas at MTS and The Cad Co. These guys do Cad 500's for a living. I bought parts from them and rebuilt my own 500. If something happens to this motor, I will...at a minimum...buy their short block, and more likely just buy a whole long block assembly. No matter who you have do your 500, it is imperative that the assembler understand how this engine is to be used. They have to understand that this motor will only rarely see RPM's over 3800. They need to understand that the engine may see long periods of cruise at 2200-3000 rpm, and then have to perform at 3000 rpm WOT while climbing long grades...sometimes at 1/2 hr at a time. The wrong camshaft for this kind of application can really screw up performance. The Cad 500 valve train is the achilles heal of this motor. IMO reusing the stock "T" style rocker system is a mistake of the worst order. (don't ask how I know) Spend the extra on a shaft rocker system for it. Both MTS and Cad Co have good systems. If you are doing the assembly yourself, you may want to follow a procedure that I learned from a Master Mechanic that I use for putting rings on pistons. It is simple, only costs a little extra time and will bring up compression while keeping cylinder pressures between cylinders consistent. Using this method, My compression is a 170psi +or- 3-4lbs . This motor uses only 1 qt/ 2000 miles and some of that is leakage out the front main seal. Check this:

I don't know how much I spent on my rebuilds. My receipts are 2200 miles away at home, but $3200 to me sounds reasonable...IF IT IS A COMPETENT BUILDER. IMO, take the $3200 and talk to MTS and Cad Co. Maybe you will spend more, but it will be done right and you will have a warrantee. (something you don't have if you assemble yourself) JMHO

Well, I spent about $2000 on mine. Of course, that was seven years ago and
I get the GOOD prices on parts and I "stiff" myself
on the labor charges. LOL Also, my good buddy quiit the machine shop, so
that deal is gone, darn it.
