I need to have my 1948 Buick transported 200 miles. My son's wedding is in April and this is a family tradition.
I'm getting bids that are unrealistically low and am suspicious that there is more here than meets the eye. For them to haul the car down and then make the return trip the quotes are running from $200 to $225 all inclusive. I don't see how they would buy the fuel for that.
Assuming there would be a 200 mile return trip (without the car) that figures out to just a bit more than 50 cents per mile.
What are the questions I should be asking? All the companies claim to be insured.
Also, anyone have suggestions on evaluating these companies? I must have 10 quotes in writing.
Thanks, and sorry for the non-GMC content, but since the car will be on a flatbed type truck, maybe there is relevance here.

Chances are they are putting that on a big truck and transporting multiples cars at the same time. So that's why the prices are "low." I'm sure the costs would be a lot higher if they were just transporting your car alone.

Jim - cost of a U-haul trailer AND cube truck to pull it with is $375 each way. I have nothing that would pull that much weight.
As far as loading onto a large auto transport trailer, I've been told by one guy that it would be on a flat bed by itself.
Smells fishy to me.

Make sure they have insurance and check the company history (BBB or similar). If you are dealing with a private party you pretty much have to go with your gut feeling.

Stick,
Gil Pittman has a trailer big enough to haul it, and the truck to go with
it. I don't know whether he'd consider renting the rig to you for the
weekend, but it would be worth asking. One kink: You'll need a loading
dock at each end.

Stick,
When I saw Jim's note, I had to laugh -- he's obviously not familiar with
our backwater. Then it occurred to me that maybe he's not too far off
after all -- with all the vehicles Tystanic has been acquiring, maybe you
should talk to them.
A little background for others: 3-4 years ago a local received a big
settlement (no details) from an on-the-job injury. He acquired and
completely refurbished a large old quonset hut (60 years ago it was a
casket factory) into a custom car body shop. The cars seem to mostly be
big 70's cars with huge chrome wheels with spinning spokes which cost 10X
the basic car value -- they're all over Americus now. He's also got
several LOONNNG limousines, and, over the past year, 7 BIG Prevost-style
tour buses. Living in a big mansion across the lake from where our street
approaches, he's really living high on the hog -- to my bafflement 'cause I
just don't see how our population can support the operation. But maybe
they can help Stick. :-)

To tell you the truth, I don't feel that good about any of the options. There are several companies operating out of the same address in S. Florida.
All are now saying they'd put it on a transport truck, which makes more sense to me. Several cars on a load would cut the cost of the trip for the operator.
Thanks for the suggestions. I might just go the U-haul route and take it down myself. That way I'd at least know it would be there on time.

Looks like more or less 4200 lbs. I suppose I could pull a U=haul with the GMC. Completely flat terrain - early spring.
Am I crazy?

Depending on which AT you get, the rating will be from 7000 to 7500# gvwr. You will need a suitable hitch (hefty). That's a lot of weight for a GMC to tow but not unheard of. They do have surge brakes so stopping won't be as much of an issue as ability to accelerate. Tongue weight will be around 700# but your suspension can probably handle that.

I followed your link to the website and noticed this in a description of one of the buses " seating for 56 passengers, on-board laboratory system and more"
I don't know what an "on-board laboratory system" is. Is that something unique to the South?

For an auto tow on a flatbaed, locally it cost me just over a dollar a mile loaded. This to get the car to my transmission fixit guy down in Griffin. So that isn't terribly out opf line. Four tires would cost waaaay mor than the haul, or I'd lend you my trailer.
