Rob. You mentioned that shield. I've never seen one. How is it different than the original GM? And if you blocked off the heat passage in the intake manifold. Then you wouldn't have to be concerned about oil hitting the bottom of the hot intake manifold anyway. Our coach sits in my heated/ AC shop that I built for it. I keep it at 60. ( except now with all the below ZERO temps. High yesterday -9. -20 last night. Now I have it at 40. ) I don't take it out in cold weather. So carb icing isn't an issue at startup. The coldest temps that we're out in. Is when we head to the March Rally. ( Yes, Carb icing can happen at 40. ) I start it up. And don't stop till we hit the warmth down South. Our 403 still has the shield in place.

Bob,

One reason for the Mondello guard is to keep the lifters in place in case
of a pushrod, or rocker arm failure. When the rocker pedestals broke in my
Cad 500, one of the lifters jumped out of its bore, dumping all the oil
pressure. I'm sure the Olds would do the same thing. Not a routine
occurrence, but it's nice to have the retainer there if it does happen.

Thanks Dennis, and Ken for the feedback. The idea of stopping a lifter from coming out due to a valve train failure is something that I have never experienced. Although that happening is vary remote. It could sure destroy an engine quickly on the highway. With that Mondello part. You could make it to a place that you could make repairs. That retainer has some real value.. Now I'm going to have to spend more money for another part for the GMC.

Since the turkey tray has gaskets for the intake as part of the one piece Assembley. When you change to the Mondello tray, you must add intake gaskets as part of your purchase. Good time to add Dick's intake gaskets with block-off plates.

Bob,

When you look for the splash tray or valley tray -- they are listed under gaskets.
