A while back I replaced the temperature sender, after which the gauge seemed erratic until the engine was thoroughly warmed up. Today while working on something else I noticed something white where the sender threads into the intake manifold. Teflon tape. Without even thinking that the manifold was the ground for the sender I had carefully wrapped the threads in Teflon tape before I installed it.

I removed the sender, cleaned the tape off the threads, and reinstalled it. Gauge works great now.

Dave,

Not by any stretch..
I've used teflon tape lots of places that a ground needed to be made, and if one side is steel or iron, it has always worked. The one that will get you is a brass, bronze or aluminum joint. They just aren't always ragged enough to tear the tape and make good contact. Oil pressure senders and switches are another gotcha....

Which begs the question - what is the proper thread sealant / lubricant to use where coolant is concerned and electrical conductivity is needed?

Matt,

I reckon it also depends on where you start wrapping the tape and how many wraps you put around the item.

I always start at least 1 thread up and wrap no more than 2 wraps.

Rob M.

According to instructions for the Equus sensor I just installed, nothing. And so far it isn't leaking.

What was used before teflon tape?
Nothing.
Teflon tape is more lubricant than sealer.
It allows you to get another half turn, maybe.
It is not allowed on hydraulic elevator valves.

If you feel you must use something use teflon paste.

How about in the old days of silent mercury switches. Having them hang out of the box for testing gave unpredictable outcomes.

It's probabl;y  heresy, but I use the same stuff I use on sparkplugs.  Conductive non-stick.  The guages work.
