I did find a original Nos Onan control board on Ebay and placed a bid on it, mine are more or less done after several repairs so a replacement was on the list..
Anyways I did just place a low bid and forgot all about it until today when I got a mail conforming that I was the winner, the total with shipping was $ 28.00 Smile

Is the seller aware that you are in Norway or do you have a US shipping address, Espen?

Well they were only about 20 miles away, and he had a truck with a lift gate.

Glad to hear that, Espen. Our US Postal Service apparently won't "boat mail" stuff any more. Air shipment is VERY expensive!

I guess it depends on how you look at it, our shipping prices are much higher than in the US, I used to sell items on Ebay but had to stop due the shipping costs.

Anyways, I have to look at the prices in Norway and if I actually are able to get hold of the item, in most cases even with the high shipping cost from the US I will be better of importing the item, either directly from the seller or through my forwarder even if that will be more expencive.

G'day,

Remember that switch pitch trans and final drive that somebody pointed out a week or so ago? I won it for $91.00

http://www.ebay.com/itm/400645267826?item=400645267826&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:3160&vxp=mtr

That beat the last SP trans / FD I bought by $119.00!

Espen,

Thanks, I agree it was a steal IF it's a good transmission and final drive, it may just be a boat anchor!

One of my GMC mates up in Chicago is going to pick it up and hang on to it until I can organize transport down to Houston.

Once I get it there I'll:

1) Degrease and clean the exterior of the transmission and final drive
2) Remove the final drive from the transmission
3) Remove the torque convertor and drain the transmission fluid
4) Mount the transmission to an engine stand
5) Remove the transmission pan and drain any fluid
6) Remove the chain case cover
7) Inspect the opened up areas
8) Reinstall the chain case cover and transmission pan with new gaskets sealed with Permatex Aviation Gasket Sealer
9) Stand the transmission on the chain case cover
10) Fill the torque convertor with cheap transmission fluid and install it
11) Plug the case vent
12) Make a plywood cover for the final drive mounting surface
13) Fill the transmission with cheap trans fluid
14) Turn the torque converter clockwise to pump it full of fluid
14) Install the plywood final drive cover

The steps above were after consultation with Manny.

Regards,
Rob M.

Ok I hope you will keep us posted Smile

Why not take it apart and and give it an overhaul while you are at it ?

Espen,

Because in Houston I have a switch pitch transmission with Power Drive rebuilt by Manny. The torque convertor for it was set up by
Midwest Convertors to match the power curve of the fire damaged Paterson engine I got in Canada which is currently apart ready for
cleaning and reassembly.

I also have a switch pitch transmission and 3.21 to 1 final drive here in Sydney also rebuilt by Manny. However the transmission
does not have a Power Drive as Australia is FLAT! The "mountains" in Australia will be easily handled by the Caddy 500, switch pitch
transmission, and 3.21 to 1 final drive.

HOWEVER, I've been chatting with Mark Bennett who has EXTENSIVE experience Motorhoming in Australia and he feels that a limited slip
differential would be a good addition to enable us to take The Blue Streak "bush."

Regards,
Rob M.

I bought several items from Europe on eBay while my son was still stationed in UK. They shipped to him pretty cheaply and he sent them on to me via military US mail. Can't do that any more now that he is back in the US and retired from Air Force.

I see Rob

Here (In Norway) a LSD in the front will be out of the question, some have tried to use it with really bad results, that is for use all year around, it not easy to steer on an snowy road if the LSD is engaging..
The solution could maybe be an air locker from ARB, but I have not checked if they make anything that fit the GMC.

Regards,
Rob M.

Ok I hope you will keep us posted Smile

Why not take it apart and and give it an overhaul while you are at it ?

Espen,

JimK sells these which work well in a GMC:

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/876

As far as an air locker goes, forget about it, there's not enough room in the final drive to fit one. JimK contacted the ARB rep in
California about an air locker for the GMC. The guy said NO PROBLEM and Jim sent him a final drive for him to forward to ARB in
Australia. About a year went by and NOTHING HAPPENED. Jim asked me to call ARB and I did. I called their chief engineer and
explained the situation to him and he said; "I have NO idea what you're talking about." We spent about 20 minutes on the phone
discussing the possibility of ARB making a locker and at the end of the day they weren't interested. Turned out that the rep in the
USA never sent the final drive to Australia.

I then found a father son company down in Melbourne and sent them a 3.07 final drive for them to look at, they were interested in
low production numbers. They had it about a month or so and called me to tell me that there wasn't enough room in the final drive to
fit a locking diff of any kind.

Regards,
Rob M.

The problem with a LSD on winter roads is if you try to make a turn and it engages you will go straight ahead, not a problem on rear wheel drive vehicles, but on the GMC.. not a good idea.

That is why the ARB would have been a good solution as you can control when it is going to lock up the front diff Smile
