MY ALTERNATOR DIED. GEN light glowing. I confirmed this by this checking the voltage on the battery with the engine running, no increase in voltage, The center post of the Isolator was also showing zero volts, the High Fan switch was not working (needs Alternator power to run). Removed and bench tested Alternator dead. Took it to a local respected alternator shop and it was re-built, same day. New bearings, and wiring harness on inside had broken off the internal stud (overheated). Everything else tested good after repairs. Re-Installed the Alternator and Eugene Fishers APC.
THE SUSPECTED CAUSE: I did trace the #10 red alternator wire from the Alternator across the top of the engine, under the air filter housing to the wiring harness. The Red, White & Brown wires from the alternator had been wrapped in electrical tape and had apparently been rubbing due to vibration. Ultimately the #10 Red alternator wire had worn through the tape and the red wire jacket was periodically shorting out against the top of the engine (2 - 1/8" to 1/4" scrapes on the wire), it had been there for a while, because it the exposed copper wires were greenish. Even with the engine heat, the electrical tape had hardened, but the wires had not and were in fairly good shape otherwise.
SOLUTION: Wire brush exposed wire,Liquid coating on the exposed wire, then Wrapped with high temp tape, Surrounded all wires with a corrugated sleeve.
- Keeping fingers crossed it's a fix. - Clark

great move
good analysis, and problem tracing
while you are there, is a good idea to put on an APC cable, (all GMC owners
need to wear protection :>)
.
Alternator failures, sometimes attack the nichrome wire, and various
problems can cause a dim alternator light. The APC can eliminate these
issues with a 10 mn. install.

available from ,
JimK, CINNABAR, and various GMC vendors
nice job
