Hi Terry,

I have reaction arm disk rear and one ton larger front disk brakes on my 78 Royale with the stock MC and a new proportioning valve, and bone stock brakes all around on my 77 Clasco. Both stop well in all circumstances. If anything, the stock brakes may feel a bit better because there is less pedal travel. There is nothing wrong with the stock system other than being 40 years old with unknown maintenance over the years.

I have never needed to "test" emergency stopping with either so can't say which might be better although I suspect the Royale may be a bit better due to the mechanical advantage of the reaction arm doing a better job of keeping all six wheels on the ground. I have also never experienced fade with either even though we live in the mountains so can't say whether one would do better than the other in that situation, but again think the Roayle may experience less fade in the same situation given the six wheel disk brakes instead of drums in the rear.

Bottom line for me is if your old system works well, keep it until it needs maintenance and then switch if you want to. If it does not work well and is due for a rebuild anyway, you are likely better off to instal the reaction arm rear disk brakes unless you or a local shop can really do a proper job of rebuilding the rears with all new components, properly arced shoes, really round drums, new bearings, seals and brake lines for a lot less. My guess is most will find the reaction arm disks to be at least as cost effective and way less expensive/hassle to maintain in the future. When I did my reaction arm disks there was no really good/reliable parking brake option - maybe there is one now. I understand it is possible to get the stock parking brake to work well for about $500 in a kit from our vendors, but have never done that. Hope this helps.

Bob, you said you finally got the drums to work pretty well. Did you make any mods to the system to accomplish that? It just seems to me that those 4 should have a lot more stopping power than is evident. I was thinking of a larger bore master cylinder (a larger bore for the rear system anyway) Can't call you now, way after 10 pm, may be able to this weekend.
