GM started their corporate blue in 1977. I know Chevy went to that corporate color that year. My 78 GMC has that blue. In about 1983. GM came out with all GM engines in black. They did the corporate colors so they could put any engine in any brand of car. Olds used gold for a long time. I don't know the full range of years for gold. My question is. What colors are the 73 to 77 engines? It seems that all I've seen is blue. Bob Dunahugh78 Royale

Sounds like you have the time line right. My 76 Gr Lemans is Pontiac blue. Had a 77 Monte Chevy 350-4 was corporate blue. My 84 Riv is a black 307 Olds. My 77 EII 455 is corp blue but a rebuilt. I do know the HEI air cleaner lid was originally gold under the black topcoat as it was showing through.

I local GMCer had their engine rebuilt at a friend's machine shop. The shop called and asked the wife what color they would like the engine. She thought about saying pink. I think they settled on blue.

During the early 70s Olds painted engines two different colors depending on displacement; 350s were gold and 455s were a medium metallic blue. Corporate blue (medium non-metallic blue) became the GM standard in '77.

The best run down on engine colors is available on many paint sites. The picture gets pretty complicated since even models within a brand had color differences.

My dad had a 1975 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with a 455 "Rocket". I distinctly remember it being blue. Lots of good high school memories in that car, but that's another story and probably off topic.

I paint my engines Orange since I am an old Chevy guy.
