Boost Solenoid Replacement [message #234572] |

I have never really had any starting issues with our coach over the five and a half years we have owned it, but I did suspect the boost system was not in working order. I replaced the chassis battery a year or so ago after finding it to be a little weak, at six years of age, but before replacing it, I tried the boost switch to get a little more power to the starter. It didn't seem to do anything.
A couple weeks ago, I had Kathy come out to the driveway and hit the switch a few times, while I checked the voltage at the solenoids. There was power across the two small terminals when she turned on the switch, but no noise or any sign of solenoid operation at either solenoid. At least I knew the wiring to both was still good and operational.
I ordered a pair of new solenoids from Jim B, along with some new stereo speakers for the new system SHE wanted for Christmas. Along with some very good advice on installation and wiring of the speakers, Jim made sure I actually needed two solenoids for my '75 coach. After reassuring himself that he wasn't selling me stuff that I don't need, he shipped them to me and I received them the following week.
It took less than two hours to install the new solenoids, and only took that long because I took the extra time to thoroughly clean all the hardware and connections as I went along. I took the loose pieces (screws, washers, ground wires) to the wire wheel and made them all shiny, and wire brushed all the rest of the terminals in place.
After completing the job, I had Kathy come back out and activate the boost switch again. This time, there was a satisfying click coming from each of them. It is a good feeling to have this system working at 100% once again. It is a simple job and I highly recommend doing it if your boost system is not operating correctly.

It must be the age. My boost solenoid just failed the other day. I haven't replaced it yet, but that and some other DC work on the Winter Work list.

Let me make sure I understand this. A GMC story where a problem was discovered, the replacement parts obtained and installed, and the problem was fixed? No blood, no broken bones, no sitting on the roadside for hours?

How about you have trouble on the way to a rally, but you get there (in some cases, get towed there) because you know that the parts and any required expertise will be waiting at the rally.
Or you find you need a "GMC only" part, so you have JimK bring it in with a subsequent shipment of his wares. That is service....

How about you have trouble on the way to a rally, but you get there (in some cases, get towed there) because you know that the parts and any required expertise will be waiting at the rally.
Or you find you need a "GMC only" part, so you have JimK bring it in with a subsequent shipment of his wares. That is service....

when I first got my coach, I got the solenoid from Jim B as well. replaced my isolator, and renewed my battery system.
ever since, I do a couple things when I start my coach. I hit the boost switch almost every time, especially when it has been sitting, and I also turn on my aux, fuel pump.
I can always hear the solid click of the boost solenoid, so I know it is still working. and I can hear the aux pump, so I know that is still working.
I think it helps keep contacts working on both the pump, and switch as well.
I think not using them once in a while causes issues. I do that with most things... run the furnace when i can, fire up the onan and run the A/C's off the onan for bit once in a while, ect..

I've got a burned out isolator, a forty year old boost solenoid, and a
brand new 1315a surepower bi directional combiner. Can I use the 1315a for
all functions?...boost, joined when charging (either alternator or shore
power), isolated when discharging? I'm thinking to locate the 1315a where
the boost solenoid is, sleeving the positive cable from the house battery
in flexible non metallic conduit across the front frame member.

these combiner have a seperate lead to connect to a boost switch on your dash that combines both batteries on your command
Just like the OEM setup

Matt,
When I called Bounds, he used one of his favorite phrases about "the half life" of that part being "right about now". I guess he was right. The funny thing is that, this being a Southwestern coach, they didn't physically look bad. They were not nice and shiny like the new ones, but not nasty and rusty like some I have seen in photos. They just didn't work.

I'm going to put in a new solenoid, polish up the connections, it's there a
generic part number, and should I put anything on the connections to aid
conductivity. I'll use the 1315 as a no loss isolator. Good info here,
