Just an update on the re-power project. I managed to dismantle the donor vehicle and scrap most of the unwanted pieces before we left for the holiday's
Although we're in San Diego with the grandchildren for the holiday's and then off to Quartzsite for a month, the internal wheels just keep on turning. I have picked up a couple of NP 205 transfer cases that I think should work but while here (San Diego), I ran into something very interesting. I found a Revcon being dismantled. It still had the BW transfer case attached to the TH400. Anyway, long story short, I have the transfer case, front axle and stub axles in the back of my VW Sports Wagon(poor thing). It looks like an almost bolt up swap to mount the T.C. to the 4L80e. The Revcon used a Dana 70 with inboard u-joints and outboard cv's which would be an easy fabrication job. Much easier than having special axles machined I'd think.
I picked the parts up 9 miles from my daughter's house and plan on running over to a local shop that has done quite a few of these B.W. cases according to the Revcon site. The motorhome had a 'shown' 70,000 miles and the case seems tight but it might be wise to freshen it up a little anyway. Small world for sure.
Anyway, it'll a while before we're home and 'real' progress can resume.
The fever continues,
Hal

Hal,
I must have missed an earlier post of yours. Are you going to be making a 4x4 GMC, or is there something else in the works?

Where do you stay when you're in Quartzsite? I've never been and I'll probably be visting sometime before the RV show. Any tips about good locations would be appreciated.

Richard

Richard,
I'm planning on installing a 6.5 TD Chevy with a 4L80E 4 speed overdrive transmission in one of my 1977 Royales. I was planning on using the front axle from a 3/4,1 ton 4x4 chevy and driving it from a NP 205 transfer case attached to the 4L80e trans. After running across these Revcon parts I may decide to go with their parts instead. I need to do some research on the Chevy vs Dana 70's strengths and see about the fitments. It's an ongoing process for sure.
As for Quartzsite, we'll be staying in Rice Ranch, just south of the freeway @ the 95 overpass. The GM and Eagle bus clubs will be having a rally Jan 16-19. We hope to park in the front row along the access road. We'll be in our Eagle with another friend in theirs. Ours is a 45' smooth skinned coach with a slide out. It has a smooth front end (non eagle look) primarily brown, no roof airs.
My buddy's is a typical eagle look, silver sided beautiful primarily blue coach. Hope to be parked together again.
Where the rally is held they charge $5 a day for dry parking and have a few with limited power open after the rally. It's a great spot if you like to shop and have walking distance to the big tent. There is normally a GMC group across the street,SE corner of 95 and the south access road. You might check there as they have full hookups. If free or close to it floats your boat there are plenty of spots around. Either north of town on 95 3-5 miles or south on 95 there are a number of areas. Mile post 99 (south of town on 95) has been a big gathering point for years. One of the nice things about the outter areas is the quiet. We get a lot of freeway noise where we park and it takes a few nights to get used to it.
If you get a chance try to look us up.
Have fun, Hal

You don't shy away from work or a challenge, do you Hal? Sounds like a great project, and to a newbie like me, very intimidating.

Thanks for the advice on Quartzsite. If things work out I'll certainly make it a point of looking you up.

take care

Richard

Hal,

The Revcon parts offer another advantage/disadvantage, dependent upon your
point of view: Using them will make it more/less difficult for others to
copy your design. :-)

Ken,

IIRC hasn't one of the Revcon guys that frequent this site noted how fortunate we are to have multiple vendors as evidently there is
only one Revcon parts guy and his prices are astronomical which reflect that?

Rob M.

You are right Ken about making it more difficult to duplicate the build. At this point I'm still weighing all the options. I really would like to do something that others could duplicate but when I found these parts, out of the blue, and at the price I just couldn't pass them up. I only paid $200 for all of the parts although I had to remove them. I still have the NP 205's that I think should work fine but we'll see which fitments work out the best.
And as to the parts support, there is no doubt the GMC wins hands down.
The Chevy front end is easy to source and the NP transfer cases are still out there, even reproduced somewhat by Atlas. Finding another Revcon transfer case could be a real issue but the front end would be a fairly simple task to build if a little pricey.
Still weighing the options right now.
Hal
