G'day,
Sanny Claus brought Helen a nice new iPad Air so I will inherit her iPad 1. That's the way it works in the Mueller family, I get the
hand me downs.
At any rate I have no intent on becoming iPad literate as I am a Windows stick in the mud.
The only thing I would like to do with the iPad is set it up as a BIG screen GPS for both GMC's.
The iPad has the GPS receiver built in so all I'm looking for is an iPad AP.
I have Sygic on my Samsung S-II and I like it because the maps are downloaded to the phone not on the Cloud / Internet / Where ever.
Unfortunately Sygic only runs on Androids not iStuff.
Is there an AP that allows you to download the maps to an iPad?

Most of the other mentioned apps (it took me a minute to figure what you meant by "AP" - usually it's spelled with two p's!) don't work too well offline. They can cache the maps on the device - but a lot of planning is required. If you suddenly find yourself without the correct map cached - you may need to look for a data source to download the appropriate map. That can be a PITA.
I have several "free" ones on the Android - but have not come across a good free "turn-by-turn" app for the iOS devices. On the iPhone/iPad - I use Navigon (now owned by Garmin) and it works pretty well. It's not free (but neither is Sygic, which you mentioned), but it does go on sale regularly. I think it's in the $30-50 range for USA or North America.
Also - are you sure you have an iPad with the GPS chip? Only the cellular (sometimes called 3G or 4G or LTE) data models come with a hardware GPS. The WiFi only models use "assisted GPS" which works pretty well for most things - but I've never thought it was accurate enough for GPS navigation. It annoys me that Apple has continued to make that choice...

Rob,
Checked and Motion X has a feature that you can download the maps for a trip that you have planned before you start so if you loose
the internet it still works.
Don't care if I have to pay for the app; here's a copy of my Sygic invoice;
Sygic Real-Time Traffic (Australia) $ 18.99
Sygic GPS Navigation Offline for Android (Australia & New Zealand) $ 25.99
Sygic GPS Navigation Offline for Android (Europe & America & Southeast Asia & Africa) $ 79.99
Total $ 124.97
Those are lifetime (free upgradeable maps) for the damn near the whole world!
Yes, Helen's iPad was purchased directly from the Apple Store in Bondi Junction (Sydney), Australia. It is both Wi-Fi and 3G.
When we're in the USA we get her an AT&T SIM and we've used it with Google Maps for a GPS.

Rob, Sygic is SUPPOSED to be available on IOS, try the app store.

SENDING mail from either iPad or iPhone is PITA, but the iPad works great for READING eMail! Lots faster than my computer!

Not trying to argue with you but I thought I'd share this also.
I got for Christmas a case in which the I Pad fits into the lid and the base
is a full size keyboard that hooks to the I Pad via Bluetooth. Envision a
small laptop, with the screen being the I Pad latched into the lid and the
part that sets on a table or whatever good size regular keyboard. The I Pad
pops right out of the cover for use by itself, but when you expect to
communicate you can slip the I Pad into the lid and hit the Bluetooth
connections and you have the regular keyboard. It is then, like a small
laptop and sits on your desk, or lap like any other laptop..
The one I got also has an additional battery pack inside and f your I Pad
runs out of juice you can hook up a USB cable and recharge the I Pad.
