More specificly , I replaced the tank sender and the remote  panel (from Jim K). The read out said it was almost full.
I hadn't filled it since I bought it 96 but I hadn't used it much either durring the long "rebuild process". I started using
my new gas range and refrigirator and was really pleased untill...no gas.
That should have been no suprise after so long but the gauge still said near full. A clue that there was a problem, but I
had ignored, was that when the batteries were fully charged the gauge actually went up to full.
Now I have two problems, what is wrong with the gage and how will I test it after the repair with no propane. Of course I can wait till Spring when I can get down the mountain to refill the tank. We are snowed in and use studed tires all winter.
Well now you have something to smile about. I would appreciate any ideas about the gauge problem as opposed to my mental problem.

Robert, clean all of the connections really good. Make sure your ground is good. Sounds like you have working gauges that just need a little attention. Does your lp tank have a gauge on it also? If not, I would put one on it. I check both of my gauges. They stay pretty close as long as my connections are clean. When the propane gauge acts up I know I need to clean connections again. Never want to run out of propane. That could mean no supper in our coach.

I second the ground check like Dan say's. If you have to take the sender out of the tank it looks sorta like this.

If you ground the sender wire the gage should go to empty, unconnected gage should peg full. Better to fix while it has no pressure so you don't have to waste any gas.

I thought the same after installing my new gauge from JimK until I connected my sender directly to the gauge and known good ground, using a magnet, I turned the sender up and down and the digital gauge matched. Now I wonder if the float is functioning properly.

The float in my tank was stuck against the sidewall of the tank. It always
read full. Got that fixed when I had everything replaced.
