With all the off topic discussion on off topic discussions I hesitate to ask. But - The GMCnet/forum is, I suspect, a rich vein for the information I need.
This Christmas I gave the CFO a gift certificate for "one set of hearing aids ASAP." The gift to her, as she sees it, is that I will wear them. (I have no hearing problem it's just that everyone mumbles and refuses to speak up and the audiologists tests must be wrong.)
I know very little about this subject. What do I need to know, what questions should I ask when pursuing the procurement hearing aids?
Thanks

Depends on how your hearing is degraded. The audiologist and ENT medic are Your Friends. Get recommends for both, and then perhaps a second opinion if something sounds silly. They ain't cheap, but in many siotuations a properly designed aid is invaluable.

Due to an accident, 40 years ago I lost the hearing in my left ear
with some noticeable degrading in my right ear. I went to a hearing
center at a nearby University and they fitted me with a bypass system
(microphone in left ear and receiver in right ear). As I left the
parking lot of the University I had my window down and a medium sized
cc Jap made motor bike passed by as he accelerated. I about went
through the roof of my car from the loud noise. I had several issues
with that set of hearing aids and it seemed that they were being
worked on more than they were in my ear. I got tired of them and just
quit wearing them.
Three years ago I got fitted with one for my right ear; it has no
volume control, no pen to adjust for background noise just put in and
use. It does have a noise suppression feature if I get into a very
loud environment. It is not perfect but it is better than without the
aid.

I am on my third set over the last 10 years. I got these at Costco and they work really well. They also have a "remote" that you can carry in a pocket, which will adjust volume and also act as a receiver (and microphone) for a Bluetooth phone or a special transmitter that you can hook up to the audio output of you TV or whatever. With this technology, the "remote" sends the audio to the "in-ear" hearing devices and you get the sounds right into your ears. They are infinitely adjustable by Costco's audiologists to zero in on your particular range of loss. I chose Costco this time because of cost and accessibility. Check them out.

Well, a lot of the sound tweaking algorithms - mostly developed by the Navy and its contractors secretly some years ago - are finally finding their way into hearing aids. We've been using them in audio processing for ten - fifteen years now. Depending on your type of loss, a modern adaptive hearing aid will help a lot - and a lot more than a 20 year old design.
For a quick look at the genre, beg or borrow a set of Bose noise cancellers and try them in your GMC. Evne they - which are a very simple setup - show a marked improvement in hearing what you want to hear.
