Trusses finally showed up late last week. They hope to get it closed in before Christmas.

Windows, doors and overhead doors are also here.

C. Boyd,

It all depends on which side of the earth you are on. ggg
They are facing the right way for the other side of the earth. LOL

All joking a side - I thought they would have put them all on one end. Then slide and flip them into place as they went.

Not only that, but they got a whole box of nails with the heads on the wrong end. They the builder showed me those nails were for the other side of the building.

Did you get 2 end trusses? I didn`t and had to modify what I had.

You might want to talk to your builder - I think they sent upside-down trusses.  Maybe those are meant for Australia.

You must know something none of us know - inverted trusses - reduces the
inside headroom.
other than that looks real good
Working is the snow belt makes it interesting.

I'm wondering if Rob Mueller had some to do with the design of that roof and trusses.

Small crane cancelled for the day so they started putting some trusses up by hand. Then the wind & snow squalls hit so they battened things down and went home for the weekend.

Hopefully they are all up now and the sheeting is going on.

There are insulation sheets going down on the inside and outside of the foundation. Then insulation & plastic vapour barrier under and around the floor. In-floor heating for steady heat and forced air to blast the temperature up for working in.

Bruce,

This is probably a stupid observation but if one has a garage with in floor heat how hot does the floor get and does it affect the
tires where they contact the floor?

Regards,
Rob M.

Hi Rob

This site indicates a maximum floor temperature of 84 degrees.
http://www.healthyheating.com/Thermal_Comfort_Working_Copy/Definitions/floor_temps.htm#.UrC6FcaA2Hs

Probably cooler than a lot of pavment you would be parked on.

Rob,
My sunroom has in-floor heat with the floor temp set to 22C over the winter (just about right to prevent cold feet). Right now its been about -14C outside overnight for the past week or so. At 6:30am that room will be about 17C (there is some spill-over from the rest of the house) so I turn on the fireplace to warm it up a tad while I enjoy my morning coffee.

I figure I'll set the floor to about 10C through the winter and that will keep it well above freezing. I'll also have a space heater for days I want to spend some time out there to take the chill off.

We have in the floor heating in several buildings at the airport. The shop where I hang out has it and it does quite well. We run the air temperature sensing thermostat usually around 60 degrees and it is quite comfortable. We do not run it any colder so the cat is comfortable.

For a boiler we originally used a normal 30 gallon water heater. When that one wore out we changed it to an on demand water heater. The on demand heater has had several problems. When it finally quits we are going back to another standard tank type water heater.

The floor temperature when it is running usually runs 5 or 6 degrees above the air temperature. Even at 0 degrees, you can loose the heat for several days without the temperature dropping below freezing.

Blaine Merrell has the same system in his "Florida room". That garage area could park 4 GMCs in it (if you put one on the 4 post hoist) and still have room to work on them to easily. I'm guessing the size is 75' by 50'. For some reason he used 2 water heaters. I never understood why except maybe he wanted redundancy in case of failure in the winter time.

The trick was to prepare the floor insulation properly. We learned from Tom Burke up in Whitehorse how to prepare the floor. He had us put a vertical piece of 2" foam all the way around the foundation and down 2 feet. Then under the floor around the perimeter for the first 4 feet we put 4" of foam. On the next 4 feet towards the center we put 2" of foam. Everything else in the center past he 8 foot mark got no foam at all. Tom taught us that the most important part was the 2 foot vertical pieces around the perimeter.
