In 66, Olds spared no expense to make sure the front wheel drive unit was as quiet as possible. Is that cover worth installing on our GMC's? I think probably not.For those that didn't know about the cover. It covered the stamped steel chain cover for sound reduction. I believe it was used for 1966 only.

Bob,

A couple of years ago I bought a switch pitch tranny off eBay that came with one of those, and I debated installing it but came to
the decision not to bother as I figgered that the chain didn't REALLY contribute any substantial amount to the noise level in the
cockpit.

IIRC it was lined with some kind of sound absorbing material.

Regards,
Rob M.

Sound control might be important, but there is a cooling issue that the
coach needs.
By the way, the plastic cover was a molded fiberglass to help attenuate the
sound.
Even the timing chain gears wer made of some phonolic materiel to quiet it.

Thanks Jim on the insulating value remark. I didn't think of that one. And heat is an issue that I generally think of. I find it interesting that some people seem to have heat issues. And the coaches were all about the same. My gross weight of my 78 Royale, 403 is around 20,000 lbs with a car in my 24 ft enclosed trailer. That does rate up there as a load. I do have an extra trans cooler. And your 3.70 final drive. ( Love that final drive. Thinking of going to 4.10 ) No side vents. Proud GMCMI Member.

Perhaps My hearing is better? All the noise from my engine room is that whine...

...Unless it is something else, but it seemed to start when I got that upgrade.

Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I probably drive a lot faster too... Very Happy
